how on earth did you get the coils so tight on that? the only way I ever get them that tight is with a mandrel.

This was all done by hand mostly, though in a few places i used pliers to help guide the wire through a tight spot. The long coils which do not connect to any of the others were wound on a separate piece of wire of the same diameter and then slid onto the piece, while the others were just wrapped around the frame.
