I remember being drowned by my own current, swimming backward in the stead of forwards. Sinking steadily in the dark gloom. I recall attempting to scream for help as my lungs filled with water. I choked and spluttered until, a beautiful twang fell on my once deaf ears. An ethereal hum eased through the gloom around me. Music. A heart- thumping tattoo vibrated throughout the murk. Music. An old friend took my hand and guided me on. I'll admit the waves were rough, the current strong. My strokes faltered, I was sucked backward a few times, but, eventually, the waters shallowed , the sun eased from behind the clouds, and to my surprise there were others. They were dragging themselves out of the crashing waves, stumbling. They made their ways to the shore. When they arrived, people awaited them. The lost were accepted with warm, dry arms by those who loved them. Friends, family. I pulled myself onto the bank was shocked to find anyone there. But there were. The ones who had always meant the most to me were waiting on that beach, arms open. I'd never been more broken, and I'd never felt so whole.
