Watercolors are such magical media; you can try to master them but usually they have their own mind and they add little twists to your works without asking. But that’s just a big part of their charm!

However, you can always try to befriend with watercolors and learn how to lure them to show their best sides in your artworks. Here I have collected my favorite tutorials which I have found helpful when learning how to work with watercolors. I wrote few sentences of each tutorial to point out which tips I have found especially useful from that particular tutorial.

Awesome Tutorials

a) b) c)
d)
e) f) :thumb161413972: g)
h) i) j)

a) Great walkthrough showing the painting progress from sketch to finished painting.
A whole packet full of watercolor secrets!

b) Another walkthrough showing tips for blending and a creative way of using masking fluid for background.

c) More masking fluid tips! Showing also how you can make unbelievable fine details and smooth shading with watercolors.

d) Really detailed two-part walkthrough with lots of close-ups.

e) People often ask me how do I do salt patterns in my paintings. Well, I still haven’t got a tutorial done but this epic tutorial shows the secrets of salt better than I could ever explain. Plus as a bonus the tutorial is introducing other cools ways to create textures in your paintings.

f) Lots of tips and tricks in this tutorial! My favorites are how to add textures by applying water on painted areas.

g) Such happy mixed media tutorial. My favorite part is at the end: add those sprinkles! I, however, have never managed to sprinkle anything with brush but I use toothbrush instead. Try out which way works best for you!

h) Wonderful, wonderful walkthrough showing how the magic happens when you can do it.

i) Ok, I know this is not watercolor tutorial but alcohol works with watercolors as well creating similar effects!
You can always adapt techniques from other tools and even from digital art for your watercolor paintings.

j) Lovely walkthrough showing how you can make characters pop with outlines and white gel pen.
You also might need post-processing after scanning  - this tutorial shows tips also for that.

Inspiring Art

Last but not least: a collection of beautiful watercolor/mixed media works for your inspiration!

You're very welcome!
Unfortunately none of good ink tutorials come to my mind... but I am sure there are plenty of those hiding somewhere!
I haven't been learning to use inks myself so I haven't been collecting tutorials yet.

Lelixiana In reply to Agaave [2013-11-11 12:14:01 +0000 UTC]

yeah, you're watching, right? xD I submit a lot of craps and spammmmmming... ^^' hehe, I still don't get why those tons of people watch me o.O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Lelixiana [2013-11-16 06:02:59 +0000 UTC]

Yep, I am watching you and at this very moment there are plenty of your works in my inbox waiting for me to take a look.
Feel free to keep spamming; that's the reason why I watch an artist: to see their artworks!
And of course it is also nice to talk with people and hear their thoughts but seeing the artworks is the main point.
I am pretty sure those tons of people watching you feel the same. ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lelixiana In reply to Agaave [2013-11-17 12:04:09 +0000 UTC]

Just take your time
I feel bad for spamming my watchers xD I've tried to reduce my activity for the past days... but then I figured I just can't xD My watchers have to get used to it
I agree :3
Oh, I'm not... I think some watchers might unwatch my deviations or journals for spamming xD E.g. if I do a poll, only like a 40 people vote :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Lelixiana [2013-11-20 05:43:34 +0000 UTC]

No worries about spamming, I am sure people will go all the deviations and journals through in their own pace.
Just post when ever you feel like it! Sometimes there are more active phases and sometimes less.

I don't think the replies in polls are necessary meaning that people have unwatched stuff from you; for example I post a poll only few times a year and my last poll has got ~12 votes.
So I don't believe people have unwatched my polls because of me spamming them; I guess they just haven't voted because of other reasons.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lelixiana In reply to Agaave [2014-01-16 19:39:15 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It really makes me feel better, you always know, what to say!

Oh, well, I love polls! I would do one a day, but I'm afraid it would bother my watchers XD But there are so many things I would want to know the answer to!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Lelixiana [2014-01-25 19:45:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, as long as you don't make a new poll every single day I am sure no-one thinks it as spamming.
And you might ask questions other people would like to know answers as well so they're actually useful for others too! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lelixiana In reply to Agaave [2014-02-02 20:04:29 +0000 UTC]

Great, thanks! Honestly, I vote in polls I'm interested in the answer, so that makes sense... I should ask interesting questions

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Agaave In reply to Lelixiana [2014-02-08 07:33:59 +0000 UTC]

No problem! ^^

I have a bad habit to use my polls for advertising stuff... But because I am doing it so rarely I hope people don't mind.
I just think that polls are easier to see with quick look than journals but I do realize polls are not meant to be for advertising.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lelixiana In reply to Agaave [2014-02-08 12:54:28 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, right xD It would be great to have here, on dA some sort of "messenger", something between polls and journals --> a short message without voting :3
