Experimenting. Feh. I get to this stage of a digital painting and I just get stuck. I can't improve the detail properly with the knowledge and skills I have, so off to watch videos, I guess? Also, I'm bitter because her face was much better before, but I didn't save it before mucking around.

I'm the last person you should ask! I'd perhaps increase the range of tone, with more extreme dark areas on her. There's a really nice & harsh light hitting her from above, so I'd probably look at darkening the areas of her in shadow - under her breasts, left leg, right leg below the knee and so on. Also, hitting up the light just above her right knee as it comes towards us. I really do like how it's looking!

Ha! Everyone has value to add and you are a good artist in both self-deprecation AND visual media.

She was actually much darker in many of the areas you mentioned and I got scared of seeming lazy and added bounce lights to them. Perhaps that was a mistake. The legs definitely still need work, however.

I appreciate you taking the time to critique. I'm going to see about implementing some of that tonight (assuming we have power).

Being lazy is good! The human eye is really, really lazy, and will fill in blanks much more effectively than any artist could. When we look at the human face (or figure), much of what we're seeing is just what we expect to see.

It's very true. When I repainted her face, I started with really blocky definitions of light and shadow, then added maybe two bright tones and two dark tones on top. Zoomed out, it looked like I'd blended it already.

I was using layers, but I merged in a fit of merging and didn't look back and now her face is plain-ish instead of haughty!

Anyway, more annoying is the inability to move from macro to micro and get some details. How will I ever be a master?

It looks like you're going too dark, too fast. Work in a much lighter value range to establish the forms and then use adjustment layers to make it darker. That will keep the contrast between lights and darks but shift all the values to be as dark as you need them to be.

Hmm, it's possible. I started with a 50% grey background, but wanted the whole thing to be her paleness standing out against darkness, so I made it all dark except her very fast.

I may not be understanding what you're saying, though!
