It is a shallow muddy bit of water with a lot of boats: some-derelict, some - inhabited, some (I suspect) - abandoned... a nice metaphor, really

Not at all - its about history and perspectives.. In one way or another (even well before I lived in Essex) I have known of Canvey for much more than half of my life.. Live there? No thank you! but I do see something rather "Neolithic" about the place and its history.. The Vikings came ashore there....
