Description The sky was a blast to draw. Originally I had everything tinged in a greenish, teal hue, but I think I like this better.

Woops! I forgot to mention that I actually saved this picture and used it as a desktop background, with this quote placed strategically over it:

"Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all."

-Emily Dickinson.

I don't know what you think about that, I hope you don't mind. But I just wanted to share this.

I don't mind you using the image as a desktop picture at all! I'm glad you enjoy the picture so much that you want to look at it at least once every day. (I'm assuming you're on your computer frequently, anyway.)

While Emily Dickinson is not my favorite poet, that poem DOES rather fit and it is quite nice. It has a lot of imagery and I believe that I will use it somehow with my next major project in printmaking class, which is drypoint etching on plexiglass. Or perhaps my next "for fun" painting.

I'm rather flattered that you joined DA to write to me; welcome! I always take anonymous comments since I have quite a few family and friends take a look here that obviously might not otherwise need a DA account. I'll be sure to visit your website as well to see what kind of music you like to create, as I am fond of music even if I only dabble at piano and sing acapella.

Great! I'm so happy you don't mind, that would've been a let down, lol. I'd love to see how you'd use that poem, and I'm glad you think it kind of fits this painting. Actually, I'm not a big reader of Emily Dickinson either, but saw this poem attached to a story I was reading! It just struck me, though I have no idea now exactly why it was included with the story...I'm not sure I even remember which story it was, other than it being on fanfiction.net, actually. ^_^;

You can leave anonymous reviews on here? I had no idea...maybe most people don't go for that on here. So you play piano and sing acapella? I think acapella singing is the toughest, actually, because you have to tune to yourself, lol. I'd be honored if you checked out my page. There's only a clip of an unfinished song which plays on the main page- I need to change that out, I think. Then the (really lame) "blog" page has a full tune, as does the (also lame) "buy" page. Arrrg. Little steps, I'm just starting out, I'll get better at this as I go, lol!

Anywho, sorry for writing such a long, rambly response to your response. Keep up the lovely artwork! (And the music, which soooooothes the soul. ^_^)

Yeah, I think you can change whether or not to accept anonymous reviews in your settings. I think maybe some people are afraid of spammers? However, I just don't see it. Easy enough to block those if necessary.

I love acapella singing precisely because of being able to tune to myself; lots and lots of scales helps. I know my vocal range and can adjust to it easily (more easily than with some tracks), I'm not drowned out by a recording, I don't have to follow along exactly (if one gets off track on a recording it's REALLY OBVIOUS, which is why recordings scare me), I can keep my own beat and change the song slightly to fit the mood if I want to do so. I love singing also in parts; my Mom sings tenor, my sister sings alto, and my brother CAN sing base if he bothers to learn it. Dad can play guitar and sing also, but he doesn't sing with us very often.

If I'm not singing acapella, I love to sing in choirs where I'm not the only voice following a track and I have a choir director leading the way --if we mess up it's not going to necessarily be my fault! Since I don't try to do strange things with my voice it's also easy to match other soprano singers, meld my tone with theirs and catch the high notes. A good acapella song causes shivers up and down my spine and feels more powerful sometimes than other songs. I was always advocating that the last choir I went to should sing some acapella songs but they never went for it, unfortunately.

VardaMusic In reply to AgnesPterry [2011-10-10 01:53:55 +0000 UTC]

Hey, I've got a tune I wrote for choir, if you'd like to hear it. You said you love acapella, and it is- it's 4 part harmony, female choir.

Your mom can sing tenor? WOW. She must have a very deep voice! I admit, when I was a little girl, I (yes this sounds weird in retrospect) really thought it would be cool to have a bass voice- a really deep, warm, resonant voice that vibrates your body when you sing. lol...I'm a mezzo soprano, so much for that, ahaha.

It sounds like your family could form a band if you wanted to. I have this dream, that if I every got married, it would be so cool if my (imaginary) husband could sing, and we could teach our kids to sing...and then that would be like a regular kind of recreational, family bonding thing. The world needs more music, lol. Who knows, I'll probably never even get married. Ouch. >_<;

Choir was my first experience in an ensemble, there's some really beautiful music out there. I feel like sending you some links, let you know a few of my favorites, if you want, anyway...

Yes, please send me links, that would be awesome. Although, do they have links to sound as well? I can follow along music pretty easily when I am singing, but I have not yet taught myself how to read music properly (I'm not at all "pitch perfect."). I know the basics, but I'm not fast and can't sight read unless I know the music very well already. :-/

Well, one of my favorites, now that I went looking...has harp accompaniment! lol. But it's for women's/children's choir, and something I sang every year for years as a kid: Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten. Here's a link to one of the songs (carols):
[link]

Also, this is just a great piece for choir and orchestra by Mozart:
[link]

Here's one called "Nigra Sum", just beautiful:
[link]

Just so you know, I'm grabbing quick stuff from youtube, not doing a lot of searching for the best recording out there, lol! And now that it comes to it, most of these aren't acapella, hope you don't mind! This is stuff I sang in choir myself.

As for written music...woops, I was just thinking of youtube stuff, sorry! But any of this is probably found lots of places, if you wanted to get it- though I've been sending you huge choir stuff, sorry! D'oh.

Thanks for sharing.

Oh, also, I've never heard this one before, but my search on youtube caught this really beautiful song:

[link]

This has a men's (well high school) choir singing, and most versions seem to have it for treble chorus- found a few lovely ones like that. But really, the men's voices- I like them better for this, for some reason. There's this that caught my ear too (with boy's chorus) but it cuts off at the end! Here:
[link]

Boys voices have a depth to them girls just don't have- it's a beautiful sound! Makes me think of the boy singing in Lord of the Rings, actually!

Okay, here's the very last thing I'll leave you...then I'll stop the spamming! This one is a video I just put up on youtube myself. I'll take it back down if you want, because it has your artwork! So I can remove it if you like; I was just a little over eager, and thought you might like to hear a song I wrote myself- and it's a properly acapella tune, lol.

Here it is:
[link]

Again, if you want me to take it down/switch out the artwork, just tell me and consider it done!

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

VardaMusic In reply to VardaMusic [2011-10-13 05:32:38 +0000 UTC]

Whoops, that second link is obviously a much more mixed group than just boy's choir! In any case, I think I enjoy that sound the best- they really emphasize the "weep" part of "Weep No More", which really brings out the emotion.

Arrg...I've been looking around for this brief solo that gets sung by a boy in the humongous Lord of the Rings soundtrack, but have yet to find it...oh well!

Thanks! I had several sources of inspiration, including an old Golden Book that I used to read as a kid called the Color Kittens. The dreamy, almost surreal illustrations of the book left rather a lasting impression on me! I'm glad you liked it.

It's too bad that cat isn't going to catch the "fish" any time soon without the help of a rocket-suit. Hmmm . . .

Oh my, I love the colors you used in this! And it's such a silly adorable idea. I also like how some things are very blurry and out of focus while others like the moonfish are clearly defined. I could see this as a poster or something. The sky is gorgeous and full. I sense phthalo...yes? Maybe? :]
Anyway, beautiful work!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

AgnesPterry In reply to WeirdAlbatross [2009-09-30 02:00:35 +0000 UTC]

If by pthalo you mean pthalo blue, then yes probably-- although not in the traditional sense as this was digitally painted and all the colors were arranged in a color circle.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

AgnesPterry In reply to WeirdAlbatross [2009-09-30 01:24:34 +0000 UTC]

May I ask what exactly you mean by phtalo? Like Phtalo blue? Because there is some of that blue in the picture, although it is all digitally done, so not exactly out of the bottle.

I'm glad you like the painting. I'm enjoying looking at some of your artwork also and listening to Sufjan Stevens due to your link, who I haven't heard before, but he seems *very* interesting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WeirdAlbatross In reply to AgnesPterry [2009-09-30 12:07:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, phthalo blue. Sorry for the confusion!
Mm, I don't think I even realized it was a digital painting!
And I'm glad I could introduce you to Sufjan Stevens! He is a bit of an oddball...ranges from electronic to banjo, and is trying to write an album about each of the 50 states. :]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AgnesPterry In reply to WeirdAlbatross [2009-09-30 13:07:45 +0000 UTC]

I liked his "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" song on youtube in particular but then that is a favorite hymn of mine anyway. Although I'm surprised he didn't try to do something more flavored with it like in some of his electronic songs that I sampled. 0.o

Thanks for the clarification. I couldn't tell if you were trying to say pathos or phtalo really and had gotten mixed up but I assumed you were going for the color since there's not much pathos in this painting. Unless you count the fact that the cat can't get to the moon-fish ever!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WeirdAlbatross In reply to AgnesPterry [2009-09-30 13:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Haha, yeah, I like that one too...that's a taste of his banjo side. Which he can actually make quite classy. :] If you're looking for more of his experimental electronic stuff, try his album Enjoy Your Rabbit..a song for every animal in the Chinese zodiac. Very weird, but sometimes you can make sense of it. XD

Haha, it's a sad thought that that poor cat will never reach the moon-fish. Just like it's sad that the mice will never reach the moon-cheese.

The cat is really cool looking almost like a glass doll, and the way it's staring really adds to the piece. Is that a little orange cross in the sky?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AgnesPterry In reply to Gargoyle-Haven [2009-06-15 02:52:09 +0000 UTC]

It's supposed to be a stylized star. I was sort of thinking of the popular "christmas star" with eight points, and also, if you've read the children's book the "Color Kittens" there's a scene where they are dreaming and it has all these cool little stars in the sky. So that is why I painted the little orange cross shaped star there.
