Description
As calling siren fades into the night,
I turn and gaze into the distance now, its skyline clear.
My fleeing steps are guided by stars‘ light,
No signal of pursuit, nor wicked trap, I need not fear.
And so I laugh,
a harmless noise.
And revel in wondrous freedom, my liberation dear.

But in a moment laughter’s gone away,
My mind allowed to focus, to freedom no longer bound.
From cold hard chains I have escaped this day,
But freedom proves an empty haven once it’s fin’ly found.
And so I think,
for the first time.
I realize in liberty there’s nowhere I am bound.

I can’t return to where I once called home,
No sanctuary seen, no safe pathways to roam.
I have no people left to call my friends.
No loved ones to keep me, or see me to my ends.
Though I have found my freedom I am caged,
My panicked flight is endless, chase forever staged.
And so I weep,
fall to my knees.
And so I’m doomed,
Freedom evades.
