Description I watch the autumn days go by
Fade away, day by day
And as much as I may try
I can't catch every falling leaf
Some will always escape my mittened little hands
And I have to let them go and do just that
Fall.

But I caught you.
You were that leaf with the shades of red and gold
The past gleam of your evergreen
Not quite lost in the iridescent transformation of your tones
But for some reason you fell anyways.
Slipped right out my mittened hands

And I wonder if I'd taken off my gloves
If I'd held you in my bare, quivering hands
And stared at your gracefully veined ridges
Traced their paths with gentle fingers
With a little less shy, and showed you that my eyes sparkled
Gleamed in the glory of being the lucky one to have caught you
If you would have stayed and let me stare at you just a little more

Maybe had I caressed my rosy cheeks
With the fuzzy side of your anatomy
And let the pale white moon
Reflect on the shimmering side you showed the rest of the world
Would you have let me hold you in my throbbing palms
For just that much longer

But you were just a leaf
And I realize that today
One with a stem just a little disproportioned in its length
And a cuff on the peak that the initial gleam in my eyes had made me blind to
You're just a leaf amongst thousands
And I think I'll leave my mittens right on
Because they're fuzzy too
And they keep me warm when the rest of the world freezes over
And never, never will they just
Fall.
