Description
Once standing armies were no longer needed many career soldiers found themselves without a home. As Starfleet formed it acquired the remnants of Earth's navies Military Assault & Command Operations formed from what had been a United Nations military oversight organization. At first MACO was used like militias and army reserve units had been used for; emergency relief during natural disasters. Eventually though as humanity reached out into space they found not all was as peaceful as they had become. Even as Vulcan ambassadors recommended caution and taking things slowly early starfleet ships quickly encountered peoples such as the Andorians and the Orions who had been in space for hundreds of years and were quite protective of their trading routes. Many early starfleet captains came to prefer having a unit of MACO troops around as their survival and pathfinder skills were useful in tense situations.
This tradition however fell off in the fist few decades after the founding of the Federation; which had actually come about in part do to several of the incidents in which MACO troops were employed. During this time there were many attempts to disband MACO entirely but enough cultures with traditional military forces produced enough willing members to hold their own against budget reallocation. It was also during this time that the tradition of using MACO honor guards for federation functions and VIPs.
MACO's did not truly come into their own and acquire a permanent portion of the Federation budget until the first Romulan War when a unit of MACO troopers heldtoff a battalion of Orion mercenaries with almost no starfleet support. When the report got out The tradition of starfleet captains asking for MACO troops being stationed on their ships was quickly resumed.
At the end of the war MACO determined that having a more specialized unit of troops specially trained in shipboard operations and planetary assaults was better for their future operations with their larger fleet based brother organization. So then the MAC trooper was born.

MOBILE ASSAULT CORPS

No organization which is protected and chartered under the Articles of Federation has been threatened with removal as many times as MACO,and the main reason for the occasional attempt on MACO is the Mobile Assault Corps. Though limited in size the MAC does not even disguise its militant nature behind a cloak of honor guards and emergency relief. The Corps exists to train and equip people who kill. Though MACO is miniscule compared to the monolithic bulk of starfleet and the MAC is an even smaller organization within MACO.
Despite many detractors the Corps has attracted members of the Andorian Imperial Guard, Bolian Gladitori and several other traditional military organizations still maintained by various cultures who have joined the federation. Though it should be noted that most of its members come from the founding worlds of Andoria, Earth, Bolar & Tellar.
Despite their usefulness in several incidents with the Klingons and the Cardiassian War it was not until the Dominion War that the MAC really became something feared.
