I must congratulate you, the image is awesome
Do you know where can I find Vue tutorials? I just dowloaded Vue 8 and I can't find no place where it explains simple things as rendering and such.

I like the feel, and I think I see where you were going with it. Some of it seems a little hyper-real, though (too "CG-ish") if that makes sense. This is mostly near the bottom with the trees and bushes.
Overall, very nice, though.

Very nice, ominous, yet calm at the same time. the atmosphere with it's strong fogginess and location of the sun is dramatic

It's great as a render, but it really wants some nice postwork on it now to make it AWESOME!

don't get me wrong I'm not the "knew-it-all" snob and always learning new things because I believe learning never ends and no one knows everything.
First of all camera position and sun light position is very good. Giving a giant feeling to the rocks and mountains. I think you used 25mm camera lens. if you didn't you should try it. Gives a grand feeling to the scenes.
issues are lighting and texturing especially on the close up. On the left side trees look a bit dull and lifeless - you need to add a couple of fill lights with some different colors depending on the atmosphere color like orange and blue. I suggest "outdoor lighting for maya" from gnomon workshop - I know it's for maya but you can use the same ideas with directional lights of Vue.
On the right side mountain textures not so good. if it's a procedural textures you can fool around with them because they have a great capability. Here I used them on the mossy top of the house - [link] - also photo textures mixed with procedurals on pipes ect.
For better detailed trees you can use the plant editor of vue - and your own textures. Asile FX have some great DVD about creating custom trees. You can do it separately and save it as vob object and import them to the eco system. Many ways to do the stuff.
You can use your unique painting skills on your scenes even when postwork not allowed. You can add matte painting mountains with "billboards" to the back for example.
geekatplay.com have tons of totally free online video tutorials. They are great to learn new stuff...
and keep up the great work

Thank you for the very nice reply
The thing about this piece is that the foreground was added somehow artificially. The main idea was what is seen in the middleground, but i wanted to show some ecosystem use. The foregorund had no lighting , so i did add some more fill lights to give me those highlights on the cliff and on the trees, but of course the placement could have been better i guess.
I was not that happy about the default vue trees , but i had this ambition about using only default stuff. The same thing goes with the painted cards. It would have been a lot easier to create a matte painting but that felt like cheating ( from the contest pov) .
So.. the image got to where it is. Hope I'll have the time to work on it a bit more in photoshop this time .
Thanks again for the comments.
