Description OH GOD IT'S DONE.
...aaand it's kinda huge oops oh well lawl

This... was annoying to do. So many screenshots, and then finding out I didn't number them right, and arg arg arg. Tell me if you find any typos. But anyway.

This does not cover advanced techniques; it would probably not teach much to people who know how to use digital art programs and make masterpieces from them. This is meant for someone who has literally no idea what to do with a scanned pencil sketch, and doesn't have the money for a tablet or expensive programs like Photoshop. Everything here is touchpad-drawn (my fingers are still thanking me for that), and done using only free software. Maybe it's not the best way, but it's a good place to start for beginners who have no digital art experience, at least.

And the result definitely looks shiny-- this is how I make all my lineart. Well, I sometimes trace with my tablet, but when I get twitchy, I go back to using a mouse.

This helped a lot but I got lost at the part 2 with the lines... I dont know if you are using a drap pad or what but is there a way to make the lines? Im stuck with a mouse pad and a mouse and I know my drawing will be sloppy if I try v . v... Sorry to bother. I'm using Gimp 2.0

I find this incredibly helpful. I've been experimenting with different ways to do lineart for a long time now and I'm not happy with any of the results. This seems very promising though Thank you so much!

Just got Inkscape earlier today after hearing/reading so many ppl say that it's the best freeware for lineart. This tuto simplified this for me (before I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off, trying to figure this thing out.). Added to faves, and will recommend this to any friends using GIMP.

this confused me D:
i tried to do what it said with left clicking and shift.....
but no line came up, i mean i had to do it over and over just for one line to show

ooh. i really need to update this for the most recent version of gimp.. they've moved a bunch of stuff around, and i'm having a time adjusting to it after a while without updating.

i'm sorry it confused you. i really will try and make another one soon. i've learned a few new tricks that make it easier. :3

I actually stumbled onto this method myself a while back, so there's a couple things I do differently that you may want to try.

First off, Gimp's vector rendering is superior to Inkscape's, so I usually end up with better results if I save the pic as a .svg in Inkscape and then open that in GIMP; this really pays off by giving me a vector version of the lineart that I can rasterize at any resolution I want later down the road.

After a bitmap trace in Inkscape, it was also really irritating trying to wrestle with vector lines and the original bitmap all the time until I noticed the lineart selection doesn't encompass the whole bitmap page, so if you just select outside the boundaries of any lines, you'll be selecting the bitmap. This is a good way to see which one you have selected too: with the vector lines selected, the selection box shrinks down to encompass just the lines, but selecting the bitmap, the selection box follows the document guides.

klezibaby88 [2009-03-12 06:10:13 +0000 UTC]

is there any way to do the vector portion on gimp as well?

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

alaisiaga In reply to klezibaby88 [2009-03-12 21:33:46 +0000 UTC]

i think the vector tools in the gimp itself are rather unwieldy. it is possible to draw something with a tool like pencil, select the lines, and do "selection to path", then go into the "paths" tab and use "trace path" to make an antialiased vector-like trace.. but i find this doesn't work too well for very detailed lines. i greatly prefer inkscape because it's possible to get a completely true-to-the-original vector version of your lines if you leave the "trace" on its defaults.

klezibaby88 In reply to alaisiaga [2009-03-12 21:57:55 +0000 UTC]

darn i was just starting to get used to the gimp, but i guess i will get out of my "box and try something else too
thank you, you've been a great help to me

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

alaisiaga In reply to klezibaby88 [2009-03-13 23:12:08 +0000 UTC]

lol. it's really not too bad-- you literally only use inkscape to trace what you made in gimp, and inkscape does that automatically. ^^

you're welcome! i'm glad i could help! :3

Been trying with much irritation to do lineart for a very large image the past couple days, and found this while trying to figure out how you did all of yours. Going see how it works out using some of these methods ^^

Wish me luck, and thanks for making this tutorial! <3

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

alaisiaga In reply to Saidryian [2009-03-09 19:49:44 +0000 UTC]

you're very welcome! let me know how it turns out. c:

also, i've since discovered that leaving the default settings on for tracing in inkscape is much truer to the original lineart-- great if you're using a tablet or don't have too many mistakes/"pointy" curves you want to round out.

alaisiaga In reply to IslandWriter [2009-01-10 11:16:23 +0000 UTC]

((phew! that was a close one!))

hahaha, that reminds me.. have you ever seen "harvey birdman: attorney at law"? the episodes where they have birdgirl, she almost always ends up doing those "internal monologue"-type things... but speaking out loud, into a microphone attached to a portable speaker. and she does it like no one can hear her.

so yeah, the thought bubbles reminded me of that.
