Assignment for Art Center College Of Design, 1980

This innocouous looking art was the basis of my later illustration, most of what is seen in this gallery.

The first 2 trimesters of Art Center, were filled with these types- seemingly boring acedemic assignments. Whole classes were devoted to them, and, I was also especially humbled by some of the artists technical abilities in the graphics field.

Many of these collages were painted by hand-before the era of Photoshop. My roommate Johnny Li-an asian-could paint these with total perfection-no bleeds, or stroke marks (I noticed all the other asian students were the same).

This was the ONLY collage I ever thought to take a picture of, probably a final assignment for a design class. This was the result of scores of assignments, and getting over the "what the hell am I doing this for" attitude. Here, I was "getting it".

Here's the basic structure of color and sizes of shapes for my future years of illustration. Namely, the balance of smaller fully saturated color shapes, with larger, neutralized transitional colors. Also, the largest shape was on the lower right, were the eye goes first (first reading)-the basis of a large number of wraparound book covers done years later.

The experience forced me to go the direction of color and design, with less regard to rendering.
