RESULTS - Devil's Crest Challenge 2015 Devil's Crest Challenge - RESULTS Congratulations everyone- you made it! The race results were close- really close . I loved reading about your team's experiences (the good and the scary!) and trying to spot the trail markers hidden in the scenery X) To collect your prizes, please contact the sponsor listed next to it :D Casual (Blackberry Knob) Blackberry Knob 1st Place: :devPonyCool42:
Chelsea Williams & Delilah and Abby Williams & Jasper
The light filtering through this breathtaking forest scene captures a serene moment on the trail for this pair. Delilah doesn't know what to make of the deer spotted in their path! Your Prizes...
Results will be posted soon!
Runs through Sept 20, 2015
This competitive trail ride will take place in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, located along the North Carolina-Tennessee border. Riders will mostly be travelling along the Appalachian Trail, one of the largest foot-trails in the United States. The event will take place in early summer, so foliage will be leafy green.
There are two trails, one advanced endurance ride and one casual ride. Prizes for 1-6th place!
Blackberry Knob (Casual)
Entry: One Image, traversing the trail or navigating an obstacle.
This one-day, 10-mile ride is geared towards riders more interested in the horsemanship and sightseeing than tough competition. Riders should not come in before a set number of hours, but otherwise the ride is not timed. The footing can be uneven in places, but there are also flat stretches suitable for a trot. As the name suggests, this trail is home to a patch of wild blackberries (a sweet treat during a long day's ride!).
- Individuals or small groups of up to three (Feel free to bring a friend or buddy up!) will begin fifteen minutes apart, with experienced guides travelling in front of and behind the group. (Up to 3 horses in an image will be judged. Multiple entries in one image will share a placing.)
- Companion animals may accompany you.
- At miles 3, 6, and 9 riders will be asked to complete a small task or navigate an obstacle, such as opening a gate from horseback, tying a ribbon to a tree branch, or crossing a bridge. Judges will score how well the horse and rider perform as a team. Riders do not have to complete any task they feel uncomfortable with.
- The first group will depart around 10am and everyone should finish well before dusk.
Devil's Crest (Advanced)
Entry: Two Images, each during a different day.
Main Image: 80%
Bonus Image*: 20% (Bonus image isn't required to enter, but even a sketch will earn points towards a perfect score!)
*Bonus Image can be literature, details below the judging section.
This challenge is for only the toughest horses and riders! You'll travel 40 miles of winding trails over two days.
The trail covers dense forest and open meadow, steep uphill and downhill slopes, rocky paths, and fast-flowing streams. In addition to what you'll encounter in the wild, there will be obstacles set up along the trail where you and your horse will be evaluated by judges. A vet will inspect your horse before, after, and during the ride.
Note: Choose any two of the three days to draw. At least one image (can be main or bonus) must be navigating one of the four obstacles described below.
Day Zero: Riders arrive with their horses at base camp. Vet inspection and briefing. Day One: Riders will cover 25 miles through the forest with several stretches of flat, even ground. The trail winds through several valleys and near streams and waterfalls, so be extra careful of slippery footing. Loops back to base camp.
- Obstacles: Navigate a sunken bridge to cross a brook. Pass under a rocky overhang and then have your horse back under it.
- Obstacles: Safely descend a steep dirt bank. Cross two large logs blocking the path.
Click the image and support the photographers!
Notes about the Trail:
- Watch out for wildlife! The last thing you want to do is take a black bear by surprise. Other critters include raccoons, opossums, hawks, foxes, coyotes, snakes, deer, and wild turkeys.
- Three short signals is the universal sign of distress. It's recommended that each rider carry a whistle in the event of an emergency. Your guides, Carson & Cadence will be waiting to assist anyone who finds themselves in a tight spot.
- The Appalachian trail is marked by white blazes and the symbol of an 'A' and 'T' intersecting to form an arrow. Include one of these markers in your image to show you read this and receive +5 to your score!
- Don't forget the toilet paper! Bring everything you need with you on the ride- food, water, map, a watch, halter and lead rope, and other supplies. You can bring a smartphone or camera to take pictures with, too. Make sure your horse and your human are dressed suitably for a long day of trail riding.
- The event will take place in early summer, so foliage will be leafy green.
For my sanity and yours, entries that do not follow these rules will not be judged. (To Clarify How the Advanced Trail is Judged: Prizes: 1st: Full body Artwork + 25 Slot to 3663 | Meurs Vite , Dom Hallow, recessive Fracture Padro Mare (from AspenForest732 ) 2nd: Headshot Artwork 3rd: Placement Ribbon 1st: Full body Artwork + 25 2nd: Headshot Artwork 3rd: Placement Ribbon
Judging:
50% Content (Suitable Equipment, Background Detail, # of Subjects in the Image, Appropriate Horse/Rider age, etc)
30% Artwork (Colours, Shading, Composition, etc)
20% Description (Doesn't have to be a story- Just give 2-4 sentences about what you did on the trail. Literature is welcome too!)
One image ( the "main image") will be judged just like the novice class. A second image is not required for your team to be judged, but they won't be able to earn a perfect score. The second image will be judged by the same rubric, but it is only worth 20% of the final score while the main image is worth the remaining 80%. This means it doesn't have to be as detailed as the main image, and even a sketch will earn points.
Prose may be used in place of the bonus image, but you'll need to state that on your entry. It will be judged as a piece of creative writing with attention to technical aspects: 50% Ideas and Content, 30% Characterization and Voice, 20% Grammar and Mechanics. Unfortunately, I will only be able to accept literature in English because I would not be able to accurately score others. :c )

One question... Could you extend this for maybe two or three days, because I'll be away in three days and coming back on the 19th... I'd really like to enter but don't want to rush my entry...

Hi there, I'm glad you're interested in joining the event!
I've already extended the deadline once, and it would be unfair to those who've already submitted their entries to keep pushing it back. But the good news is, if you just miss the deadline and can get your entry in before results are up, you can still place! Late arrivals will just take a score deduction. I hope this helps!

I'm not sure if this has been asked or not. So with the Devil's Crest trail, would it be 2 drawings in total or 3 for Day Zero, One and Two?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AlbinoBadger In reply to alydoodlr [2015-06-23 13:55:04 +0000 UTC]
Good question! Only two images are asked for. Day 0 is there so you can choose: two trail images OR one trail image and one arrival image.
And the second image isn't required, but it will help your score.
Thanks for asking! I'll try to reword the description so it's a little more clear

it's a bit complicated, but I have two accounts, this one and Three-MustangStables. The latter is the one where I own stables, this one (which is btw a couple of years old) is with a traveller with a horse. Is it ok if I enter with this account, using the horses from my other? (or can I perhaps even enter with the traveller? She does not own a stable, but are highly experienced in horse riding and, well, these things )
P.S. Is there something I need to do to prove the other account is really mine? xD just wondering
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AlbinoBadger In reply to TheVoeranger [2015-05-13 15:00:00 +0000 UTC]
Of course you may! Anyone can enter with any horse as long as they have permission, but of course you do because you own them ; ) No need to 'prove' it
Thanks, I'm looking forward to your artwork

For the Blackberry Knob it says "Small groups of up to three". Does this mean we have to draw three people together, or can we just focus in on one? Also, how many entries are we allowed?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AlbinoBadger In reply to Anonymous-Shrew [2015-05-12 23:24:32 +0000 UTC]
Hi there! You absolutely do not have to draw any horse but your own But, if you'd like to include a friend's horse or another from your stable in the same picture, you can draw them all travelling together. I'll change the wording to clarify that.
You can enter as many pictures as you can draw! If you would like to enter multiple horses in the same image, it will be judged just like the collabs. The only restriction is one entry per horse, please (so they're not competing against themselves!) ;)
Thanks for your interest! Let me know if you have any more questions
