Description Meagre protection,
nothing but a brittle shell
to shield nakedness.

Why does the bird hesitate,
what is causing his delay?

I do not know, but as long as it does, we have hope left.

Perhaps the bird is curious how a false sense of security can protect a person. I know it stops me down in thought all the time.

Athina has an extraordinary vision.

I think Surrealist imagery tends to be menacing. It seems our unconscious is more often than not tinged with paranoia.

Not sure how surrealism morphed into menacing, but there it it. These many years later, the original surrealism seems, at best, merely strange.

Further into the past, there were painters like Bosch, who painted in a visionary mode that must be closely akin to some Surrealists.

I think it was Dali's taste for the grotesque and menacing that attracted Hitchcock.

Bosch is disturbing and menacing when first encountered (one does get use to it), but I've never seen Dali as particularly so. If you want menace, check out ~selfregion

The Spaniard is a bit of a ham, I must admit. I don't know how familiar he was with the Bosch paintings in the Prado. They might have coloured his approach to his art.

~selfregion looks like fun!

He did seem to understand that the art itself is not enough to move into his level of response.

Yeah, the way taking Frida Kahlo to the next level is fun.

"what is causing his delay?"

Perhaps a sense of delicacy about an edible delicacy?

I love the words you're using!!Mearge,Brittle..
I hadn't thought about it..really,what is causing the delay?
Maybe the evil itself hesitates before the total innocence..
Wonderful once more,Alec!

As I looked at your image. I realised that it referenced the world of Heironymus Boche, but with a subtle difference.

For all its bulk, the bird seems simply curious, not predatory. The innocence of the creature,as you suggest, appears protective.
