Brief Backstory:
Before birth; Chestnutkit was born to Sandstep (a RiverClan cat named for her sand-colored pelt and light steps) and Arborstreak (a ThunderClan cat named for his brown pelt dappled with various streaks of other shades). They had barely been apprentices during the move from the lake when they met. Their time spent there together, when the Clans had to work together to find a new home, had developed a strong bond between the two. After settling, the two did not see each other for moons. It wasn't until after the two had received their warrior names and ran into each other on a border patrol that they began sneaking away from camp to meet one another, rekindling their bond and forming a flame. Sandstep didn't bear kits until she was nearing her elder days. A late senior warrior, she was only able to bear one healthy kit. Due to being half clan, Chestnutkit ended up with his mother in RiverClan. She never returned to the border meetings, although Arborstreak ventured there nightly, waiting, anticipating the arrival of his kit. After several moons, when he knew the kit would have been of apprentice age, he began fearing the worst: maybe she died during kitting. But no, because he hadn't heard it mentioned at any gatherings. Maybe there hadn't been a surviving kit. But that couldn't be it, either, because he had heard it announced that she birthed one healthy kit. But raising the kit as a late queen and then being named an elder at Chestnutkit's apprenticeship, Arborstreak would never run into her at another gathering. Maybe that had been her plan all along. Sandstep took on another mate, a tom named Cinderstrike, and raised Chestnutkit with the idea that Cinderstrike was his father.
Kithood;
Chestnutkit spent his kithood believing that Sandstep and Cinderstrike were his parents. He had his mothers sandy tone; but for the life of him couldn't understand why it was that he had brown patches dappling his pelt, when Cinderstrike was an all black tom. As a kit, he hadn't worried about it. He never got into too much trouble, never wanted to sneak out of the nursery, always stayed close to his mom. He was shy and timid, he almost refused to socialize with the others. Of course, at this point in time, Chestnutkit was being referred to as a female. He spent the first six moons of his life being treated like a princess, raised like a sweet girl, told that ladies don't roughhouse or do this or do that. And at this point, how was he to know? He was just a kit, after all. But his days were spent with a lot of distress and discomfort and he was never able to comprehend why. Cinderstrike kept suggesting that something must be wrong with "her," that maybe because Sandstep had been so old it had caused mental problems. Chestnutkit felt ashamed, like his father was disowning him, like Cinderstrike was unhappy with the kit he had created. Chestnutkit felt unimportant and never left Sandstep's side until the day of his apprenticeship.
RiverClan Apprenticeship;
The day he earned his apprentice name, Chestnutpaw began to feel a sense of pride. He wanted to make Cinderstrike proud of him, he wanted to be the best apprentice he could be. He was given a mentor named Nettlefur, who was a tom cat (dfab) who had grown up identifying as female until he figured out who he was. This made Chestnutpaw uncomfortable at first: what if he called Nettlefur the wrong thing and accidentally said "she?" He was scared to death of insulting the tom, but once training began, Chestnutpaw began to feel more comfortable. As he got older, he began to understand Nettlefur better - Chestnutpaw often listened to Nettle's rants and stories of his past. It made him feel good to listen, to know that he was letting another cat feel relief. They were very close. Around ten moons, Chestnutpaw began to find himself relating to Nettlefur's experiences. He began to comprehend dysphoria and began formulating that maybe, just maybe, the buzzing and frustration and fear that always clouded his mind was the same thing. At first, he asked that people not gender him, that he be referred to as they, and he found that not being referred to as a she-cat gave him relief. For a while, he called himself neutral, if that even existed. He didn't know. He just knew it felt better. It wasn't until Chestnutpaw's mother was an elder nearing her final days that he learned the truth about who his father was. Sandstep explained to him that she had loved a ThunderClan cat and that she had taken on another mate to protect him from discrimination. Chestnutkit felt resentment towards his mother for lying to him for all these moons, and he felt an even stronger fire burn in his belly that Cinderstrike knew and had gone along with it. The tom wasn't his father - had he even ever loved him? He stopped talking to both of them, despite his mother's efforts to reach out. As an elder, she was becoming irrational, and sometimes she would cry out to Chestnutpaw as a plea to come back and say that she loved him, that she missed him, that he has her family. Other times, she'd spit his name out like it was snake venom on her tongue, cursing his name like he was a disease, saying he was a mistake and she wished he had never been born. Bees rattled his mind, filled him with questions of who his father really was. "Would be be proud of me? Is that why Cinderstrike won't even look at me? Is that why I can climb like no other cat in RiverClan?" Eventually, he became so overwhelmed that he went straight to the leader, wailing and in tears that he needed to leave, that he was half-clan, that he was ashamed of who he was, but more importantly, he just wanted to meet his father. And most importantly, he wanted to get away from Sandstep. RiverClan's leader understood and let him go without hostility or remorse. It was an exile without harm. Now Chestnutpaw knew he just had to figure out how to get ThunderClan to let him in without tearing him to shreds. His only regret was leaving Nettlefur behind.
Loner;
For the next moon, Chestnutpaw (now going by Chess), wandered outside the borders, wondering just how he was going to get into ThunderClan's territory without unleashing the wrath of a patrol or entire Clan over his body. He left scents outside the border and would return to the same spot, waiting for a patrol to pass by. But whenever he heard one coming close, he became frightened and took off running. He had no idea what he was supposed to say. "Hi, my name is Chess, I'm a former RiverClan cat and I want you to take me to your camp because I think my dad lives there." He had never talked to any ThunderClan cats, not even at gatherings. He always stuck close to Nettlefur and his then-Clanmates. How was he supposed to know what they were like? How they would react? How they would treat him? What if they killed his father? Arborstreak: that was the name Sandstep had told him before he shut her out. What if he told them he was looking for Arborstreak and then the tom got exiled? Or what if he was dead? What if it was some kind of lie and his mother was just a senile old fool, telling tall tales in her old age? Day after day, he'd wait at the border. Day after day, Chess would think himself into shambles and take off. He was so anxious, he began to lose strength as he lost the motivation to hunt and take care of himself. Eventually, his fatigue took over and he fell asleep on the border. He woke up in a den, the scent of ThunderClan filling his lungs in an almost suffocating way, only to see a strange cat hovering over him, who introduced themself as the Medicine cat of ThunderClan. He had grown frail in his time of not eating, with his ribs poking their way just slightly from his frame. Of course, this was the last thing he would have planned, but here he was: in ThunderClan, right where he wanted to be. When he had regained his strength, they told him he was free to go. Hesitantly, he told them his story. There was speculation and uncertainty, but when Arborstreak stepped forward, now an elder himself, and demanded that they let him stay, the leader couldn't do anything but allow Chess to stay.
ThunderClan Apprenticeship;
When Chess saw the old tom step forward, he felt his breath get stuck in his throat. Arborstreak was the spitting image on himself and he knew, without ever hearing his name, that that HAD to be his father. Of course, it was incredibly awkward at first: this was his father that he had never met. Things wouldn't all just be peachy keen right off the bat. But it didn't take long for Arborstreak to tell his side of the story and how he had waited night after night for his long lost mate to return, only to be disappointed and heartbroken when she never did. Chess was given the option to take back the name Chestnutpaw: but he requested a name change because his old name held too much anger and sorrow for him, not to mention the lie his mother had told him all his life. So he was granted the name Acornpaw at eleven moons old. At this point, he requested that he be referred to as a male: this was a fresh start for him. It was a little shaky at first as everyone was unsure how to take the situation, but within no time, he had adjusted and settled right into a new Clan life.
ThunderClan Warrior - current;
He was given the name Acornpatch for the patches of color along his pelt. At his first gathering after his warrior ceremony, he learned of Sandstep's death due to old age. At first, he felt little sorrow. But as time passed, he began finding himself disappointed that he had never made up with her. Maybe it was for the better. But he couldn't help but think of the tales of the old Clans, of old ThunderClan cats who had been born to the medicine cat in a cross-clan litter and then raised by her sister. At first, there had been a lot of hatred when they found out the lie. But eventually, the cats had forgiven their family. Every story is different, though. Acornpatch had a strong bond with his father up until he passed, which was when Acorn had reached 15 moons. Since then, he hasn't really had a lot of communication with his Clanmates. This is his home now, but despite that, things still feel uneasy from time to time, so he keeps to himself and stays out of others' ways for fear that he will have a hard time building connections due to his half clan affiliations. He's waiting for something better to happen, and maybe it will sometime soon. But he's growing sick of doing nothing other than just lying around all the time with no social connections. It has been three moons since their travel to the new territories, and Acornpatch is still trying to find his footing.

Roleplay Sample: Acornpatch snored quietly in his sleep, his whiskers quivering as his breathing rustled them. A single ear flicked at the sound of movement. A bird called raucously in the distance. His mind fuzzy as he came to consciousness, he realized a dawn patrol was being gathered just outside. 'Maybe I should volunteer to join,' he thought to himself, shifting himself from his side to his stomach and cringing as a sharp pain stabbed at his shoulder. 'I must've slept on it funny.' He grimaced and shrugged the single shoulder, working the stiffness out of it. When it started to loosen up, he extended his forepaws out in front of him, lifting his hindquarters in a half-hearted stretch. The tom cat felt heavy on his feet and he could feel the sleep still lingering. Why was he so tired all the time? Acornpatch mentally voted against volunteering for the early patrol, making a promise to himself to make up for it another time. He brushed loose earth from his ivory chest fur before pushing himself to his paws and lugging himself out to the clearing. This was the earliest he'd found himself awake in what felt like moons. "What a waste," he muttered to himself outloud, realizing that his Clan contributions had been depleting as of late. He scolded himself and decided he'd go on a hunt later and gather as much as he could. If the hunt was good, maybe he'd end up catching too much to carry back by himself.
