Description Convent of Saints Cyprian and Justina

Standing in the south of the East Side long before it was the East Side, the Convent and the Cyprian Sisters have been a fixture of New Cartec since before most care to remember.  Everybody knows about them, but most don't actually know anything specific.  Being a cloistered order has given them an air of urban legend.  They don't get involved, but the door to their public chapel is never locked and the homeless of the East Side can sometimes be found carrying some of the best wards in town.

The building is large, beautiful, and imposing.  Covering a large city residential block, it's cream brick is covered with graffiti, but it's streets are free of blood.  The gangs, specifically the magically connected ones, avoid business near it the same way they would around an old mob bosses' house.  The tall, thin windows you can see from the street don't open and are not large enough for a person to fit through.  Though, if you're looking to get in, you'll find the front door open.  Inside is a small chapel and a large, heavy door with a pull beside it.  That's not locked either, though it doesn't have a knob on the outside.  Anyone with magical sight, or an open third eye would see much the same thing both outside and in, except the place practically glows with power and is heavily warded so as not to overly radiate it.  Directly above it is a white cross that can only be seen by magical means, exactly like the ones above St. Teresa's and All Saint's Cemetery in the University District.

The Sisters

The Cyprians and Justinas were founded to be both Haven for those, converts or Christians respectively, with magical talent or knowledge and Shield for the Church against those powers.  To say the Order and the Church have had their issues would be putting it lightly.  Generally, it's a trust problem.  The new world was an opportunity for distance and New Cartec, already proving to be a supernatural gathering place, seemed ideal.  The Sisters broached a deal to both the Church Fathers and the heads of the newly blossoming Community: Let them build a Convent and they would act as a buffer between the two.  The Community wouldn't have to worry about Church paranoia or Crusaders and the Church wouldn't need to worry about demons taking over the world due to unpracticed covens.  It, of course, helped that if the Cyprians should ever rebel against the Church, again(a little episode during the dark ages they are none too proud of), the Church could catch many a supernatural by simply wiping the city off the map.  Not that they would, of course.

Today, the Order provides high level wards and other magical services when needed, but is largely left to the cloistered life.

Mother Superior – The Reverend Mother Cyprian Dymphna

The Reverend Mother is a tall, severe woman.  She's an old battle ax with steel grey hair, thin lips, unamused eyes, and a bearing that would send many crying for their mommies.  She's also sharp enough of both tongue and intellect to slice, dice and make julienned fries.  She truly is kind and mothering, though, as long as you don't cross her, which you've really got to work at, honestly.  Before becoming a Cyprian, she was a Summoner of Spirits of all types.  When she called a Demon way out of her league, it tricked and possessed her.  For three days the Demon owned her body and soul before a hunter trapped her.  The Demon was way above the Priest's pay grade, though, so she was given to the Cyprians.  The only way to banish the Demon without shattering her soul was to call down an Angel.  Verchiel of the Choir of Powers expelled the Demon, binding itself to her in the process.  Dymphna has her suspicions that Verchiel is not the Angel's True Name, but would also never dream of compelling the Spirit in such a way.  That being said, she does still know the True Names of several smaller Spirits and Demons, though it's been years since she's called on them for anything more than messengers.  Trifling with the Mother Superior is a very bad idea.

Sister Cyprian Lucy

Small, pale and waif like, most don't think much of her at first glance.  Sr. Lucy was a powerful, natural seer on the outside and she used her gifts for profit.  One day she had a vision so lovely it made her weep.  She never told anyone what it was, but she immediately gave away her worldly possessions, sought out the Cyprians and joined.  She can be flighty and hard to talk to if you're not used to her quick pace and breakneck subject changes.  Of course, living about as much in the future as the present can be difficult, so the Sisters tend to forgive her lapses and slight smugness.

Sister Cyprian Our Lady of Sorrows

A curvaceous, vivacious woman, she manages to even make the Habit work for her.  Sr. Sorrows practiced Santeria before coming to the Cyprians.  Her magic hasn't changed much, honestly, though she never does talk about what specifically brought her to the Convent.  She's generally an amiable, friendly presence, quick to laughter and hard to offend.

Sister Cyprian Fiacre

She's a broad and powerful looking woman with a face to match and the hands of a laborer.  Sr. Fi was a Shaman that specialized in plants.  There's a strong sense of irony to her that pervades just about every aspect of her being.  She still talks to the flora more than people.

Sister Cyprian Sebastian

Wiry and fit with the broad, angular features that suggest Asian descent, she's actually quite beautiful and graceful in her Habit.  Sr. Seb was a herbalist and Physical Mage, who had used her talents to fight for those she believed in.  Finding herself deceived and betrayed, she went on a journey to purify herself and find peace.  It brought her to the Cyprians.

Sister Justina Catherine

A narrow, hawk nosed woman with wise eyes and a sharp tongue.  An academic sorceress, it is rumored that she's a powerful alchemist, though it's rare to see her doing anything but reading these days.
