Description “Standard Tuning,”
said the man
the man in the suit,
the man with the grey briefcase,
the man with the non-silver cufflinks;

she replied, in his uncomfortable fiction,
“why does the sunbeam wait in the park?
why does the moonlight break my heart?
why does the nighttime never end?
   why won’t the daylight come?”

sweating, freezing
(again he has forgotten to turn on the central heating),
he sits down again, dropping the  briefcase
and knocking over a white, cold coffee on the floor
that still hasn’t been drunk yet
and looks as though its ecosystem –
(“what the hell should I say?” he interrupts, and then reddens)
– is about to
decentralise the Health Service.

the man groans. there is an election by plurality
in ten minutes, and he has coffee
on his shoes.

in the meantime, in the other room, I decide
that my comforter in those moments
when I wake up at 2 o’clock in the morning and
forget who I am

is going to be gin.
