"Your horse saddled, boy?" Briggs asked his oldest son, Lane.

"Yes, sir." The boy grumbled. Lane turned away to retrieve the mare he had saddled, a young horse named Zip. The mare watched him cautiously as he approached, debating whether or not to pull back from the retrains of the lead rope. Lane gave the horse a pet on the neck to calm her nerves. He grabbed the bridle from the saddle horn, sliding the bit into the mare's mouth and adjusting the browband.

Lane's role today was to be the pickup man, something Lane didn't exactly enjoy. His father is the owner of Rockin R Ranch, a well-known bucking horse breeding ranch. And today, was the first haltering for the young crop. Briggs liked for the horses to be familiar with the halter and lead rope before having a rider on. This also allows the horses a chance to learn to work with the pickup man.

Lane sighed and grabbed the reins of the horse. He stepped his foot into the stirrup and pulled himself into the saddle. Riding such a green horse for this job was not ideal, but his father had taken the only seasoned pickup horse. Typical of him, Lane thought to himself.

Lane opened the gate to the arena and turned the horse to shut it behind him. The young horses snorted in the holding pens. Lane was quite used to this tradition, having grown up in the bucking horse business. Lane's father was the only breeder he knew who let the horses go in the chute for the first time without a dummy or flank strap though.

"Bring 'em in, boys! Nice and slow!" Briggs shouted to the ranch hands. They split off a handful of the horses and slowly steered them toward the opening of the alley toward the chutes. The first in was a liver chestnut mare. Lane immediately recognized her as the horse his little sister affectionately calls Sandy. Sandy had been quite the troublemaker around the ranch, often managing to open the gates to the field and even breaking into the feed room of the barn once before. Lane moved Zip to stand toward the first chute, to easier guide the first horse down the row of chutes. Sandy lazily walked through the dark alley of the bucking chutes, ignoring her much more impatient herdmates gathering behind her.

The first chute in the row was not one the ranch utilized super often, due to it being near the corner of the arena. A small patch of grass had grown in the chute. The Sardinian Ranch Horse immediately put her head down and eagerly nibbled at the sweet grass. The ranch hands pushed the mare forward so they could slide the chute slide shut behind her. As the chute slide slammed shut, the mare raised her head, grass hanging out the side of her mouth.

Briggs climbed onto the back of the chute, bronc halter in hand. He slid the noseband The mare continued to chew her grass, stopping when the man reached his hand over her head to buckle the halter. Once the halter was tight, Briggs moved down to the next bronc. Lane took the time his dad was haltering to warm up his horse. Zip hadn't been ridden much that week, as Lane was off at a rodeo in Wyoming. Briggs wasn't exactly supportive of Lane's rodeo career, probably another reason he had stuck Lane with the greenest horse on the ranch for the haltering day. Nevertheless, Lane took his time to make sure Zip was well prepared for the day of work.

"Ready, boy?" Briggs yelled from the end of the arena, loping a few circles with his horse.

Lane shouted in response, turning his horse back to the center of the arena. The men kept their horses near the center of the arena, to help train the bucking horses to go straight down the arena and not veer toward the chutes or fence. The experience of being turned out of the chute was a foreign, sometimes nerve-wracking one, so having a familiar horse standing in the arena was helpful for the youngsters.

Lane pulled his horse to a halt near his father, not turning to look toward him. All at once, the first chute swung open swiftly. The chestnut mare hesitated for a moment, and then high loped out of the chute, almost prancing as she got closer to the pair in the arena. Lane and Briggs began their usual routine, Lane rode toward the inside of the horse, getting Zip as close as possible so he could grab the horse's lead rope. The green mare hesitated as she got closer to the much larger bronc, Lane leaned forward to encourage Zip to speed up as they got closer. Lane leaned over and swiftly grabbed the thick lead rope attached to Sandy's halter. He gradually slowed Zip to a slow lope and dallied the lead rope around the saddle horn. The mare halted abruptly as she felt the foreign feeling of the halter being pulled. Lane kept a tight hold on the lead rope as he steered the horse toward the open gate at the end of the arena. This training also allowed the broncs a chance to learn where the exit was of the arena when they were done bucking.

"Easy, girl," Lane said to the mare. She continued to fight against the pressure of the halter. Lane gave Zip a nudge to tell her to continue toward the gate. The smaller mare struggled against the weight of the bronc, but pulled toward the out gate. Once inside the alley of the gate, Lane released the lead rope.

He turned Zip back toward the arena and returned to the center to wait for the next bronc.

LOVINGGGGGGGG this coat color for Sandy!!! Of course, my girl harbore nails every import design I can think of!! My people drawing skills are *eye twitch* being tested by this Lonestar Bronc group, as I usually find some sort of clever way to hide faces or just use a character from SSO. ATLAS, the time has come for me to finally try to improve my people skills (haha). Lane here gets to be the poor victim of my first attempt at freehanding it *sweating*
