Description
Third style redesign for the Evangelion's armour restraints. Jeez this stuff is hard. DXThis is the second drawing for this style Eva. The origional is so bad, it'll only be used for reference for further works.

why would a big bad robot need a gun? i mean...there's rockets and lasers...why something as prehistoric as a gun...?

It only looks like a gun. It's main function is a portable cannon. Same thing with semi and full auto variants. There is no real reason for it to tell the truth, but rockets can only be used once and lasers powerful enough to do serious dammage are too energy inefficient. This story (Neon Genesis Evangelion) was supposed to take place durring 2015 a.d. :/

It wasn't the most effective weapon, but keeping in mind how expensive rounds would be for a gun combatible with a giant robot, you'd want something realitivly accurate, and cheap (well, as cheap as ammunition the size of a cadilac can be...)

Well Patlabor use old style Projectile Guns too, sp too Ghost in the Shell, and even Gundam has these "primitive" weapons in them. But, given their size they would tend to have much larger impact and damage than one would thing given the "upscaling" to Mecha size. Plus they are realistic in that if given all that time to develop their "bio-mecha" they might not have time or money to turn out all those fancy laser weapons and such. Upscaling(and re-engineering a bit) Handguns and other Projectile weapons would be both a time and cost effective method of arming your shiny new Mechs. Plus, the EVA's DO have bazookas to use plus, other beam weapons, and even a nasty beam sniper rifle that truly blows the stocks off any other Mecha's save a limited few(IF YOU SAW THE SHOW). Watch a few episodes and see...

and plus when it comes to evangelion,the first thing that comes to my mind is EVA 01 beating the shit out of an angel with its bare hands or some kind of blunt object.Most of the time guns were useless against Angels.

The only one to actualy KILL an Angel was the Jury-rigged beam sniper gun. That was with all of Japan's power output channeled into it, plus a fleet of cooling trucks. It worked once and never did again, though it was seen again in use(minus th power/cooling hookup). Kinda a waste of money with all those weapons, should'a made more spears/swords or maybe a 'progressive arrow' fired from a giant eva sized bow(?)...
