His parents were killed in a car crash after he moved from Japan to America and grew up, so his older sister became his parental guardian. In kindergarten, he became friends with Sam after she protected him from some bullies. They have grown up together since then. As they reach adolescent years, Sam becomes one of the most popular students from Middle School to High School.

On his 17th birthday, He was convinced by Sam into ditching school during their school hours, and gained connection with Jacob since his dad owns a yacht while getting Kaitlyn into writing a letter to their folks about their "Field Trip to Galapago Island for Studies".
That night, when Josh, Sam, Kaitlyn, and Jacob were all together at the dock; started the engine, sailed from the harbor, and traveled to sea. There, they started the party and even cranked up the volume since they're far away from the mainland but unbeknownst to them, Josh and the others heard the roaring beast (The Mosasaurus a.k.a. Big Mona) attack them and sink their yacht, causing them to drown before washing up on an island.
