COMMISSION 2 for *JoshalmightyYeah I suck at explaining things
This is partially old as I have clearly stated this technique I no longer use and what not but I might for a rushed job or something.... I know eventually I'll do another... hopefully better tutorial some day.

After you finish selecting everything in step 3 go to select > modify > smooth... then enter the # of pixels you would like to smooth 1-3 is usually a good idea. Using gradients or smoothing is a GREAT idea when doing shaded areas :!EDIT 2!:

lawl. there there... i konw how you fell. But once you get a basic knowledge for photoshop. every other program comes pretty smoothly. 'cept for corel programs...i fell like a 1st grader when i try to use those xD

There's an easier way to outline it
Go to channels, select either the R, B, or G channel, copy it, select it but clicking the icon at the farthest left icon at the bottom of channels, inverse the selection, and fill!

But you can do it any way you want to
