Well better quality means Photoshop can express its godlike powers (with a little help of course ). Why touch the characters when you can entirely redo the background? Now I think this is just what you needed!

I've updated the icon, please tell me what you think^^ I managed to remove the jpg artifacts but couldn't fit all characters, as expected, still its better than the previous imho.
