Please, don't stare,
If I wave my hands in the air.
Understand, that touch can hurt,
but it doesn't mean, I don't love.
I may not get close,
But please, don't push me away.
I cry and become angry,
Just like anyone else.
I don't know how to express,
My inner most thoughts.
That doesn't mean,
That I don't have them.
Don't forget, to hug me gently,
No offense is meant,
If I don't hug back.
I love you too,
Even if I can't tell you.
I may act out,
Or just shut down.
Please, don't stare,
My family is already aware.

I am happy you approve, I have spent much time with my friends son since he was young, as he grew I could see that through his quiet ways he was screaming inside, this is what I heard.

I am only on the milder end of the spectrum, but I appreciate this so deeply. We are different, we do struggle, but we are still us, and we love who we are. Seeing Autism Speaks, an organization claiming to be the leading advocate for Autism, treat us like wild beasts is so saddening. But it warms my heart to remember there are gentle souls like yours out there.

I hate when organizations speak for "everyone" when they only truly speak for themselves. There are many organizations that truly only speak in terms of donations, that they fund back into their own ranks, not looking to better the lives of those affected by the actual disease... or in your case not learning that it is not a disability but it is a different outlook on life.

Unfortunately that happens a lot. I've heard even the Susan G. Komen Foundation is guilty of putting themselves ahead of those they claim to help. Autism Speaks put out an absolutely horrifying ad that treats Autism like some kind of disease that can wreck your life at any minute. Not to mention they devote most of their money to diagnosing Autism in the womb rather than helping people who actually have it... and they once supported the "vaccines cause Autism" argument and only recently changed their mind. They even took legal action against Autism advocates who tried to start an "Autism Speaks doesn't speak for me" movement. Every time someone is insultingly using the word "autistic", all I can think of is how horrible organizations like this claim to help us while only fueling their own selfish motives.

I am truly sorry for this. I know that vaccines don't cause it... However, I think there may be something to the military "causing" it. There are so many children who have active duty parents that have autism. My friend has two, and her husband was exposed to so much. They routinely expose military to mustard gas and other harmful chemical warfare, to prepare them for duty. But they worry too much at what causes it, and not enough about how to treat it without causing more harm than good.

I think that they would rather eradicate it in the womb, than try and help. They need to learn that those affected are not monsters, they just have issues that need to be addressed through counseling, not shoving medication down their throats.

I think that's a fair point, and it brings up yet another issue with Autism Speaks: they only focus on children. Autism affects adults plenty as well, but somehow the stigma against them is even greater because apparently being an autistic adult makes us immature somehow. And you're right, they choose the "out of sight out of mind" approach and would prefer shutting up anybody who voices dissent. If I can get political for just a moment, whenever a shooting happens, we always bring up that the best way to take action is a better push for mental health assistance. Are we going to keep talking, or are we going to actually set a plan into place? Then again, I think one thing everybody can agree on is that our politicians are all talk and no action on these issues.

Yeah, mental health and gun control... like limiting the sale of guns for protection is going to prevent bad people from getting them (illegally) and killing the good people who are unable to purchase a gun to protect themselves (cause they go the legal route) . Not only that people don't need guns to kill or harm others. You could easily  do more harm with a m80 coated in glue coated in BBs... Yeah my hubby used to work at a video store and someone did that to their night drop box, there were bbs scattered all over the store and well all the movies in the drop box were destroyed. Do that in a crowded mall and people would be trampled... Just sayin...

Anything can be made a weapon. The counterargument is that we should make it as hard as possible to kill people with weapons. But then you argue these shooters don't care about the rules. But then that could apply to almost any area of the law, and what you're left with is a very tangled web.

Very true... just look at all of the creative shives in prisons... Violence and Humanity go hand and hand, regrettable but true, all you need do is flip through a history book to see it.

As an individual on the higher end of this spectrum, I can easily relate; it's very hard to express myself in front of others. Simple acts such as smiling and hugging can be very difficult, and the monotone voice I possess doesn't help. I find this poem good; an interesting thing I noticed is that it starts and ends with rhyming, yet the middle is much more freestyle. In a way, it kind of represents the average person with higher-functioning autism: he/she seems perfectly normal on the outside, yet is wired so much more differently on the inside.

I am glad I was able to capture it well, people need to understand that when they can't see something it can still exist. I look like a normal healthy adult, but within my hormones and body are falling apart due to unseen conditions. No I am not autistic, I am just broken within, making it hard for me to feel human. We live in different worlds but feel much the same.

I am glad it resonates with you. When I found out my friends son had it I started reading up on it. Reading a book is nothing, you don't know how it feels until you interact with someone.
