Just stumbled across this amazing capture again! I have never witnessed an event like this before. I wonder wouldn't the eel that size stand any slim chance of escaping or even damaging the birds stomach if eaten in that condition?! Hard to imagine the formidable gave up its life and succumbed to the cormorants belly as lunch?

Hi ya! Yes, if the cormorant swallowed him whole and alive then there could be a risk, but that's part of why they throw it up into the air and thrash it around, it may well kill the eel/fish but would certainly stun it enough to be swallowed and digested. Not sure what happens with the Chinese cormorants that are used for fishing, as they catch the fish underwater and swallow it to be regurgitated back at the surface...?
