How to use

The below is a system to create a career for your horse and rider. Feel free to edit the system to a way that suits you, such as adjusting the rng to only role scores in the top ten places or adding extra info, such as showjumping times.

To use this, copy the below graphs, or make your own using the headings. If you're feeling fancy, you can create a spreadsheet in google or excel. Event, category and level will need to be determined manually. For example, the category, while meany can be standard shows, you can also choose to choose young rider or under 25's for younger competitors.

I recommend doing multiple shows at once, to save the rnging multiple times.

Also, sorry for any spelling errors, and any misinformation. If wrong, please correct me

Events

Usually named after the location of the event. You can also use this section for the show type (eg, Nations cup, world cup, Olympics, ect)

You can use real place names, or make your own place names. I personally like this site to pick my place names. Go to Place Names > Cities & Towns, then pick whatever place your pair would compete.

Category

While many of the shows will be standard or open, meaning pretty much anyone can enter who qualifies. The other option is more closed categories. I've listed the basic ones here:

Senior riders (18+)

Young Riders (16-21yo)

Junior Riders (14-18yo)

Children (12-14yo)

Ladies

Under 25

Young Horses (1-5)

Age's may vary by country or nation

Level

You will have to do your own research on your your own country/nations national level system. You can find eventing levels here .

International levels are:

1*

2*

3*

4*

5*

Scoring

For scoring, i use this site (although any rng will do.) This generator has a distribution mechanic, which is handy, i will write the settings for the different disciplines. You can also generate multiple scores at once, so is easy for doing mass scoring.

It's good to not that a horse starting a new level will generally have lower scores than before they will go up a level. This may be an idea to keep in mind when putting in the min and max.

Dressage

3 Decimal Places | Bell-shaped distribution | Factor: 3-4 (can be higher for closer scores)

For the dressage, set the decimals to three places. I set minimal score to 30, and the max to 80, however these can be changed. Please note a score of 70 in dressage is very good, while 60-70 is good. Any horse consistently scoring 60 is ready to go up a level, thus a score of 50% is not a terrible score.

The score will be a percentage based, featuring 3 decimal places. The scores will need no further editing.

Show Jumping

Despite show jumping using both time and faults to determine the winner, we will only be using the faults. You can roll and add time and time faults if desired.

Part 1 - Faults

Left skewed Distribution | Factor: 2-4

This will determine how many faults your horse has. Horses get 4 faults for disobedience and knocking a pole. However, as we can't tell the rng to only pick in 0, 4, 8, 12 ect, we will be rolling as separate indecent. Thus, scoring 1, will count as four faults, and 4 will be 16 faults.

Min will be set to 0 (no faults), and max 4 (unless you have a terrible jumper, in which case you can go up to roughly 12)

If the score is 0, continue to part 2 (the jump off round), otherwise, go strait to the scoring with a lose in mind. (no higher than 10ish)

Part 2 - Faults

Left skewed Distribution | Factor: 2

With time being so fast, horses are more likely to knock polls, so keep the factor on 2. Once again, these scores will be times by 4: 1, will count as 4 faults, and 4 will be 16 faults.

Min is 0, max is 4

Eventing

In eventing, the lowest penalties wins, thus all phases are added to a final penalty score. Dressage is where most of the points will be given, with most winners running a clear round in cross country and show jumping, however several have won while knocking a pole in the show jumping.

A good final score is in the 30's, although there have been cases with winners in the 20's. General scores in the 40's and 50's are not uncommon.

Part 1- Dressage

1 decimal place | Bell-shaped distribution | Factor: 2

Min to 20, max to 45. You can change these depending on the horses proficiency in dressage.

Part 2.a - Cross country - falls and run-outs.

Bell-shaped distribution | Factor: 2

Statistically, cross country is the most likely time to be eliminated with falls happening happened 1 out of every 18 starters will have a fall according to the FEI . To simulate the fall and run out rate, we will set the min to 0, and the max to 15.

1 will be considered a run out or refusal, resulting in 15 points. 10 will be a fall, and result in an elimination.

Part 2.b - Cross country - time faults.

Left skewed Distribution | Factor: 2

Most competitors will accumulate time faults during cross country, especially in the higher levels of eventing. o.4 will be added for every second over the time allowed.

Min will be 0. Lower levels or faster horses can have a max of 40, while slower horses and higher levels can have up to 120 seconds.

Part 3.a - Show jumping: pole faults

Left skewed Distribution | Factor: 2

This will determine how many faults your horse has. Horses get 4 faults for disobedience and knocking a pole. However, as we can't tell the rng to only pick in 0, 4, 8, 12 ect, we will be rolling as separate indecent. Thus, scoring 1, will count as four faults, and 4 will be 16 faults.

Min will be set to 0 (no faults), and max 4 (unless you have a terrible jumper, in which case you can go up to 12-15)

Part 3.b - Show jumping: time faults

Left skewed Distribution | Factor: 2
Time faults arn't exactly common in the show jumping phase, although are clearly not uncommon either. Like above, we will need to work with numbers that will need to be converted into points. This time, 0.4 a fault per second. Thus, 1=0.4, 2=0.8, 3=1.2, 4=1.6, 5=2, 6=2.4 and so on.

Min set to 0, max 6.

Placing

Uniform distribution | Factor: 2

Figuring out placing is a little harder than just doing rng. It also includes figuring out the likely hood of where the horse placed. For example, a horse doing dressage, who scored 55.344, is very unlikely to win, thus getting top three would be weird. Instead, the pair should be 15th to 30th. Meanwhile, a dressage score of 88.239, is much more likely to win so getting 20th would be weird.

The average amount of starters per competition is 30, with national competitions having roughly 20 starts, and 4* levels have up 60 starters.

Below, are the basic numbers used for determining placings.

Dressage

75+= min 1 max 5       65-75= min 4 max 12       50-65= min 10 max 20       50>= min 20 max 30

Show Jumping

Only do one or the other. The jump off will be used unless you did not complete it (meaning the horse got a jumping fault in round 1), in which case use the round 1 placing.

Jump off

0 faults= min 1 max 4       1 fault = min 3 max 6      2 faults= min 5 max 10  3 or 4 faults= min 8 Max 18

Round 1

1 fault= min 10 max 15       2 faults= min 12 max 20       3+ Faults= min 15 max 30

Eventing

Add all the scores together (dressage, show jumping and cross country)

30>= min 1 max 8       30-40= min 3 max 15       40-50= min 15 max 30       50+= min 20 max 35

This is very nice!! Easy way to do this shit (I've been looking into doing RNG shows for my horses, so I wouldn't have to search for events). Definitely going to keep this in mind!
