Wildschönau translates from German as "wild beautiful valley". The Wildschönau valley in the Tirol region of Austria really is quite pretty. We stayed in the village of Niederau, the first village of the valley and travelled up and down the valley every day.

The highest mountain in the valley is the Schatzberg at 1898m (just over 6227 feet) above sea level. There is a gondola which runs for 4km up the side of the mountain. It is the longest gondola in the Wildschönau valley, and I believe in Austria. Unlike the Markbachjock gondola, this one does not take you to the top of the hill. You have to climb a good 400m to reach the top of the Schatzberg from the gondola station. But when you get there, the 30 minute gondola ride and the fairly steep climb are all worth it. The views from the top of the Schatzberg are spectacular.

At the gondola station there is a small cluster of restaurants and I think a hotel, which is nice in summer when you can sit there with a beer, but in the winter, I can imagine this place is packed with skiers for the many runs down the mountain.

This photo is of a small lake near the station. Not many people made it over the fence to have a look at it, or to walk the path that followed its banks before going down the hill.
