Description "The Raptor Red Snow Sled"

Raptor Red (Utahraptor ostrommaysorum). A digital painting I did for a class assignment. A fan of the book, I chose to use it as a semester long assignment I have to do, which is basically to produce five digital illustrations for my portfolio using a specific book as source material.

I'm posting this from the 75th Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology in Dallas. I just met Dr. Bob Bakker himself yesterday and gave him a postcard size print of my Raptor Red portrait  . I also donated a 1:1 sized print of the painting to the annual silent auction, which is set to take place tomorrow night. Along with that and a few others, I donated a high quality print of this snow sled scene on Wednesday.

This is one of the most iconic scenes from the book thanks to Luis Rey's rendition of the scene years ago. I tried my best to make mine as different as possible and looked to Bill Watterson's Calvin and Hobbes snow sleigh strips for ideas. Calvin and Hobbes crashing into the snow was the first thing to come to mind when I was figuring things out.

Completed on the 5th of October 2015.

Done using Photoshop CS6, Corel Painter 2015 and pencils.

Raptor Red is one of my favorite novels of all time and I really enjoyed this scene from the novel. You really captured the sheer surprise and "joy" of the raptor sliding down the hill. This image shows that not all dinosaur paleoart pieces should show not only the sheer ferocity or dinosaurs fighting for survival, but curiosity and the fun of sliding down the hill. I really love snow both falling as well as the snow being kicked up as the raptor slides down the hill. Also I love the raptor on the ground when I see it's expression I could see it saying "Don't worry I will catch you!" Amazing piece of work and keep it up.

Incredible piece!

I read this book on audible and found it absolutely riveting! I can say the exact same about this drawing! The perspective and color schemes are gorgeous, but I think the feathers on the back of Red could have some work done in texture, but it's not like I could do any better XD. Another thing I love is the color of the snow on the cliff side and the trees. The blue reflection is stunning! It is nice that you are up to date on the feathers with with the primaries on the wings, and the feathers going past the eyes to form a beak like snout. I give this piece a 9/10 keep up the amazing work!- Snugglesthedinosaur

Epic illustration!

I'm a big fan of raptor red- and you brought back my memories in an awesome way!

The Dromaeosaurs are skillfully illustrated: almost everything about them matches what we currently know on Dromaeosaurs biology. You even connected the lacrimal portrusion! My only nitpick is the Utahraptor's tail: while the feathering is up-to-date with modern discoveries, Utahraptor tails are rather short, and more akin to Oviraotor tails. The wings might also need to be bigger. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=" (Smile)"/>

The art-style reminds me heavily of some of the more recent D&D art, and more than matches it in quality!

In short, keep up the good work!

Wow, I saw this book on the library shelf, and figured it would feature clones of Jurassic Park "raptors"...
I guess I should give it a read!

Wow this is incredible. I really hope that you'll depict some of the scenes involving the Acrocanthosaurus from the book. This was also one of my favorite scenes in the book though. Great work! That's wonderful that you got to meet Bob Bakker himself too,
