Description More of my team of super soldiers. I posted another version of this character last week, but pulled it after taking an objective look. I think (hope) this is much better. I used a photo reference of a well known actress for this. Her name is withheld to see if anyone recognizes the model. I just want to see if I managed any kind of a likeness.

Well, Jessica Alba does come thru; but, like ~NonieR said, you've GOT to try and refine your line! This looks too messy. Use a smaller-caliber pen for the outlines, it doesn't cost much more than that sharpie thing you're using... It's really frustrating, because you've got the talent to make this so much better!

Also: I've been out of the army for almost 15 years, now, and things might have changed - but I'm pretty sure that is not IDF insignia...

First let me say Hooray for you! The reference was indeed Jessica Alba. You made my day.

I will get some thinner pens when I can afford them, but I'm counting every dollar. So, until my Pilot Precise (not Sharpie) runs out of ink, technical pens aren't in the cards. I did try a thin ballpoint on my latest effort [link] , but I didn't go for a specific likeness.

You are right about the insignia and uniform. Sergeant Roth is part of a multinational team of futuristic super soldiers in the novel I'm writing. Many drawing of that tram are in my gallery.

Glad to have made your day! I thought it was indeed a pretty good likeness.

Staedtler has a line of "pigment liners", which come in all sizes - from 0.05 and up - and are pretty cheap.I don't know if you can get them in the US, but it might be worth it to look them up.
Anyway, keep up the good work!

I love your art, but I keep being frustrated by the blobby Sharpie inking. Please, I *beg* you (on my dumpy and mildly arthritic knees) to consider trying pens with a finer and variable-pressure tip, whether real or virtual; it can make such a difference to the clarity and crispness of a picture.

Your frustrated but ardent fan,

I too lament my lack of proper tools. Alas, I am broke, and must make the best of what I have.

I recently realized that the problem became worse when I bought a ream of a new kind of paper. I'll go back to the old stuff. It may not solve the problem but it should help.

Have you considered inking digitally? I've found it's a great alternative. What I also do sometimes is use a fine-tipped mechanical pencil (0.5 mm) to do my lineart and then scan it and use the Levels and Curves in Photoshop to make the lines black and the paper white. It's not ideal but it's much faster than digital inking and if you work large it can work very well.

Coloring uninked pencils will be my next experiment. Inking digitally will have wait until I get a tablet.

It can be done with a mouse, and I've done it like that, but that only works with very thin, regular lines.

And good luck with the uninked pencils!
