watched a few episodes of avatar today, just for the nostalgia of it, and i realized how mako doesn't even compare to zuko.i mean mako's basically a pussy and even though zuko's all emo and teenage angst filled, he's got so much character in him.
and blah blah blah, so much more to say in this matter, but i'm feeling sick so i'm just gonna leave it at that. also, this reflects my current state of mind and how he still got some rage even after a few years, probably cause he doesn't wanna be like his father or something.

I completely agree. Mako cannot possibly be compared to Zuko. Zuko is such a great character.

So just don't compare them, I think they are both awesome in their own awesomely awesome ways. Zuko will always be on the top of my favorite characters list from Avatar though.

Finally, someone else sees that Mako is nothing like Zuko apart from the ability to bend fire. Amazing picture, great emotion in it.

Aw come on, give Mako some time. Zuko took about a season before you really saw that he was troubled and not just a prick. And look at Sokka, in the first episodes he's a punk kid, and by the end of the series he becomes a great leader (and according to Master Piandao the potential to be one of the greatest swordsmen who ever lived.). What made the Last Airbender great was the character growth! We're on what, episode 5 now? Let the characters grow!...
...but damn I miss the hell out of Iroh.

p.s. I don't think Mako is the "Zuko" of this series, I think he's the "Katara". I don't think we've even seen the "Zuko" of this series yet. Man, I have to stop thinking about this show.

Yea I prefer Zuko as well. The only reason people even compare them is because they're firebenders, I guess..
I hope really they'll develop the new characters much further, since for now they're pretty bland compared to the last generation.

I was just thinking the other day, there's no dynamic to the new Legend of Korra, where as with The Last Airbender, there was a bad-ass contrast between Aang, a vegetarian peace-loving monk, and Prince Zuko, an angry, conflicted son of the firelord.

oh my gosh, I agree with everything in your artist's comment, I can't stand people comparing Mako to Zuko in terms of character, because I don't think he even has as much *potential* as Zuko for character development never mind character in the first place... Ugh. yeah.

Part of me agrees with your statement on Zuko and Mako while the other part is still smitten at the pretty boy handsomeness they kinda made Mako out to be. I mean so far with two of the characters (them being Make and Asami) they dont really have any personality to then but looks. when Asami was first introuduced, all I could say was "Huh, she has a nice character design." but other than that yeah, she's pretty much like EVERY OTHER FEMALE that is the much obliged opposite of the main female. And I think that kinda runs for Mako too, though I like the quirkness he has and his ability to be this upfront guy he doesnt have much going for him other than FireBenders killed his parents. Even when Asami said something like "yeah I lost my mother too" it just like 'of course you did, fire benders just love making good people suffer'. Sorry I kinda rambled there. I really do like this piece and much of your various others C:

Your very right. Zuko is a much more fleshed out character than Mako is - and his struggle and imperfections make you love him.
Mako on the other hand is a little Gary-Stu like - he's a little too perfect and doesn't have as much character as Zuko.
Hopefully as the series progresses Mako will develop a personality

I really don't think they are comparable characters and I don't think they are intended to function the same way. Zuko is the tortured angsty "I gotta prove myself" royalty whereas Mako is guarded, ambitious, but also grew up poor. These characters really don't warrant comparison.

Yes, I definitely agree. I just wanted to express my genuine love for such a great character as Zuko by comparing it to my liking of Mako. But I hope Mike and Bryan won't disappoint us and Mako will grow into a great character eventually.

I went back and watched all of season 3 yesterday. The Avatar and The Firelord (the episode that explains Roku and Sozin's history together) is one of my favorite episodes in television, period. There are so many wonderful episodes. I really do love Zuko's evolution and self-actualization throughout the series. When he reunites with Iroh, I find that to be such a touching scene. I really hope they beef up Mako's plots to given him some growth and character development. We need characters that have to make tough decisions that make you conflicted. We need situations and decisions that require character and integrity. I hope they give us these things for Mako so he can truly live up to his potential and become a more awesome character.

aww your feeling sick? Hope you feel better! And i do have to agree with you. Zuko has waaaaaaay more BAMF then Mako. Mako has cute, whiney powers that only appeals to a certian crowd while Zuko's got that POW that Mako can't even reach for or dream of.
