Description
Kull: The Conquerorcover art for Kull #1 from Dark Horse Comics
pencil, ink and digital color
This was my redesign of the Robert E. Howard character, Kull. The idea was to make him look different than Conan and have his own identity.
I originally wanted to make him a little darker and more brutal than he ended up here. I also created the visual design for the creature behind Kull.
This is one of the first full color covers I did. I was trying to keep the colors over my line work lighter, so they wouldn't over power the ink work.
This one turned out great in print!
Here's some more WIP, pencil details and sketches for this art: [link]

What brilliance! I am in awe of the detail work, the composition, the dynamic flow , and most of all: the character captured in Kull's facial expression and pose. All in all a magnificent piece - thank you so much for sharing this visual treat with us

Hey Andy, mind telling me (maybe note me) how much this kind of thing costs? I might want to commission you for an upcoming project!

Amazing detail and incredible talent. I love the way it is composed, which draws a path for the eye from foreground to background. Great perspective and the colour scheme suits the subject.

I'm a big fan of Howard's characters.. I find your version of Kull really interesting.
Lineart's simply gorgeous, and colors give the right depth with that orange/brown shade on Kull making him emerge from a cold background. Beautiful work, really!

Winged serpent minotaur. Can't go wrong!
What's that above his head, tho? Looks like could be another wing, but the texture is all different.

It's the other wing, but I left it simple because it's in the background and not really too important. thanx

Got it. The armor design is very cool, too, kind of like a necromancer of sorts.

Your line work is just to die for... I particularly like how the overall pale colors don't take away from the gloom and doom feeling of Kull and the monster. So awesome

Now, that's a cover. I'm glad you wanted to keep the ink more visible. Too many works lost their impact and strengh (in my opinion) because the artist choose depend more on the computer effects than in the ink.

It's great seeing your work in color. I like how you've rendered the face in a more painterly style . Then used warmer colors for Kull, and cooler colors for the creature. It balances the picture beautifully.

I don't smell nothing. But I see a very impressive piece. Andy, your work is just over the line where I'm not able to hate you for being so good. Whatever you get, you deserve and I hope it keeps coming to you. bravo.
