Description
I can feel a series coming onThis one gave me a chance to draw some Alan Lee/ John Howe rock faces. I received the Art of Two Towers and the Art of the Return of the King for my birthday (completing the set!) and have been drooling over their pencil work for weeks.

I do love the way you draw textures, especially trees and rock - I'm terrible at them, I should really invest in some lotr art books! xD

Really cool Andy! I was thinking Roger Dean might have been the rock inspiration.

Thanks for the heads up on Roger Dean, my friend. Another embarrassing gap in my illustration education

Ah dear, Andy -- Why'd you have to let me know about more LOTR art books? I already have far too many...
The geological shaping you've created here is just too much fun! If I had to describe it in a word, it would be, "crinkly".

hahhah - very apt choice of words!
Sorry about the LOTR book thing - I'm in the middle of a massive LOTR bender at the moment and I have decided there are just not enough LOTR books out there!

"LOTR bender" -- haha. I'm sure I'll go through one myself as the newest film's release date comes closer...

I've been looking at the sketches you did for this ilu and no matter how I look at it you're so smart on your composition! Usually the other one would be the one taking my attention and leading me into the ilu but here you took so good advantadge of the size difference, it's grandious (does "grandious" exist?).
As sombody else said this one deserves color Andy (even if it doens't really need it at all) if you know what I mean...

Thanks, Tere. I really appreciate the comments, particularly about the composition. I don't hear that very often but I really focus a lot on the composition. It's one of the most fun parts of any illustration for me - and as we know - so important to the final result!
Grandiose! I like it And a fitting word to choose. It was a late decision to play up the size difference between the main dragon and the story teller but I am glad I did.

Composition is alway key, isn't it? I can't count how many pieces I ruined only for a bad composition and it's something I like to study in depth from other artists works, it's great to find someone sharing the different options and their final choice, I'm so glad you're one of the sharing bunch!
Grandiose! I knew I was messing it up heehee That difference of proportions brings in all the magic to this ilustration Andy, I'll say it again GRANDIOSE!

It's a funny ol' thing composition but when it's right it can really turn an average illustration into something special. Which is why I have finally seen the light and do lots of little thumbnails before committing to a finished illustration. Thumbnails are fun!!

This is really sweet! You should colour it.
Then come up with a story, and voila, a best selling children's picture book (just make sure you don't infringe any copyrights. Ok yeah, I'm STILL sore)

There is definitely a children's picture book in there - and I agree, colour would be needed to sell it

I think a bit of colour would just make the shapes a bit clearer.
The texture of the dragon skin and that of the surrounding rocks are very similar, in small view I have trouble making out what the picture is about.
Not that this is a problem in itself of course, but I think with a bit of colour you could bring the dragon shape (and that of the smaller figures) out clearer and distinguish it better from the background.
Gorgeous pencilwork, btw! And I *really* dig the idea for the picture.
(iIf I can ever get my head around the intricacies of copyright law, I would like to try my hands at doing a bit of small scale publishing myself eventually. I happen to know a bunch of pretty talented illustrators .. - So if you do make a book, and in the unlikely event that bigger and better publishers aren't going to jump for it, please let me know!
)

-Suddenly, reading on my couch didn't seem quite as exciting... Adorable dragons and I really love the rock formations! (Especially the "Misty Mountains" on the right, for some reason, despite that the shading looks a lot simpler just there...)

Are there many Alan Lee drawings in the artbooks you've mentioned? And have you seen Alan Lee Sketchbook?

There certainly are quite a few Alan Lee drawings in the "Art of" books. He was amazingly prolific over his time on the movie it seems. And yes, I have his sketchbook. A very precious book that one is
