I'm a bit surprise that Sony pulled that game off with what little franchises they had left. XD

I think they have more franchises than Nintendo.

I checked they do the reason that smash has more characters is because most are from the same franchise, here are all those from the Mario franchise, Mario, luigi, peach, bowser, wario, dk and diddly kong. While the most from a single franchise in Sony battle royal is cole and evil cole. I'm counting third party franchises since otherwise Nintendo would lose pokemon and mother and probably some others.

Yes but Nintendo by far has more franchises overall:
Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon (games came first so it counts), Earthbound, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong, Nazo no murasame, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero, Punch-out, Excitebike, Kirby, Pikmin...there's probably more but i'm missing them right now.
And games like Metal Gear Solid don't count exclusively for Sony anymore, seeing as how there's been 4 Metal Gear games on Xbox and 3 on Nintendo systems.

Donkey kong is part of Mario idiot. Kill zone, parappa the rappa, demon souls, little big planet, tearaway, little rascals, infamous, ape escape, sly copper, arc the lad, beyond two souls,buzz, blasto, crash bandicoot(they still own it they just let other consoles get some games since they are not stingy, otherwise pokemon wouldn't be Nintendo since its on phones), dark cloud, dark mist,drakan, driveclub, the eye of judgement, everybody's golf, uncharted, fat princess,ico, jax and daxter, god of war, gran truismo, journey,knack,lair, the last guardian, lemmings, locoroco, medievil, patapon , puppeteer, rachet and clank,, shadow of the colossus. So please who has more franchises and unlike Nintendo most of these have spin offs that don't stick to a new formula.
