Made for 's Valentine's Day contest. Warning just in case.

I was really conflicted about what couple to choose for the contest. I loooove Joachim and Isle, and Andriy and Beliy, but for some reason I just felt compelled to draw Bruno (left) and his partner Rudolph. (This may or may not have something to do with the fact that I can't stop thinking about how I sent in my essay on homosexuality in the Third Reich as my writing sample for my grad school applications.)

The idea for the picture is rather bittersweet. I imagined this was right before Bruno was meant to deploy to the Eastern Front (when the events of the comic take place), so this is their last chance to spend time together. Not to mention their love is amazingly forbidden (homosexuality was actually illegal and criminally punishable even in the Weimar Republic, not to mention Hitler's Germany).

Sunday morning rain is falling
Steal some covers share some skin
Clouds are shrouding us in moments unforgettable
You twist to fit the mold that I am in
But things just get so crazy living life gets hard to do
And I would gladly hit the road get up and go if I knew
That someday it would lead me back to you

Bruno and Rudolph belong to

EDIT: I just realized, a little late, that I never answered the contest question in my description. The members of #ASaHM-Fan-Group were asked what they thought Valentine's Day meant to the characters of the comic. For Bruno and Rudolph, I feel that love means permanence but sweet vulnerability; something precious that can ostensibly can be taken from someone, but which never really leaves us. Love is sublime, and while society can try to control it--it never will. They might be torn apart, but they will always have their Sunday mornings.

I'd also like to note that this piece won second place in the contest. I'M SO HONORED!!
