Animal Farm. The character is Jessie the Border Collie. The actual inspiration was the modern movie, I think, but I may not have watched it if I hadn't enjoyed the book so much in school years ago.

Great whites make me think "wolves of the sea", because they're grey on top, white below, and they're carnivores.
