My friend, Laxmi Bharani, , did this picture and asked me for some advices:

I love the vivid colors and the blue light of the background, with its reflections on the girl's hair. Nevertheless, something hearts me in the compositions: the main subject of this picture should be the 2 faces and, mostly, the girl's face, but the violent red of the roses catch the viewer's eye on the flowers. This needs to keep the flowers in the shadow, except for the few parts of them which touch te faces of the models (and we will not forget to add some shadows on the rose in the girl's hair). Like this:

In this prupose, I'll use the technics of the 2 adjustment layers, which very useful when we want to add a heavy shadow (or a bright light).

First, add a Curve layer over the picture, and heavily adjust it to the dark (but with a light contrast), like this:

Then, add a black mask and, with you tablet (or if you don't have, with a low opacity brush) and a soft white brush reveal the parts of the picture you want to darken, like this:

Then, add a Curve layer over the picture, and heavily adjust it to the brightness (withΒ  some contrast), like this:

and do the same operation than with the dark adjustment layer, like this:

Give the final adjustments to the layers, as you feel it. Here is the final result:

using the curves layers comes out much better than the burn and dodge tools.Β Β

Not better, it depends on the work. For soft settings, I ofte nuse the burn and dodge tools too.
