Description The last of the three monochromatic pieces I've been working on recently. This one is quite simple. It's just a person with a vast imagination and can get quite lost in it from time to time. A common term  for that is a Space Cadet or Space Case. So I went more of a literal route with the term Space Case where she is letting her imagination take over and it deals with space at the same time. This is my personal favorite of the three, but I'm biased since I love space XD. Enjoy .

This is a great piece, I looked at the original model picture, and it looks really good how you softened the edges to make her somewhat emerge from space.

Thanks ! Yeah, I do need to work on that a bit more, but I have come a long way over the years .

The gradient was really well done, you surely don't give yourself enough credit! I'd hate to pry, but I am curious as to what program you used to create this? I like it.

Well I can be a bit of a perfectionist sometimes . Nah, you're fine, you ask me almost anything really. I usually use Photoshop CS2 for my photo manipulations. I've done it with this piece. Sometimes, I use GIMP instead which is a good alternative. I have yet to find a program that can do photo manipulation better than these two and are still free. Although, technically Photoshop CS2 isn't free. Only people who have purchased or at least owned an actual copy of Photoshop CS2 at some point were actually able to download the free version online when they released it some years ago on the Adobe website. GIMP is free and open source though so no problems there. If you do come across a good alternative to Photoshop and GIMP when it comes to manipulating photos, please let me know . Also, if you need help on finding free or open source programs, feel free to ask me since I am making a list of free programs. Lol, this response ended up being longer than I thought it would XD.

I totally appreciate your thorough response, this will really help!! I've been looking around at programs to see what I can do with some of my photos, and I am willing to pay up to a certain point, though I really didn't know where to start, so thank you for the help, it has saved a bunch of "brain damage" trying to go through stuff that doesn't work all that well. c: I will be sure to come to you for any questions, you are now the photoshop expert in my book lol

Ah, what are you looking for in the program? Enhancing photos (improving the quality of the image through various means)? What is the maximum amount you'd spend on a program? Lol, I'm no expert, but thank you for your confidence in my abilities . I'll promise to try my best at least .

What I am looking for in a program would be to add fantasy-like effects into some of the photos, perhaps I would use it to enhance the quality of some every now and then for the landscapes. I'm not really looking to touch up anything on the portraits so much as to add some interesting context, so no manipulation of the figures, though additions to different landscapes and architecture. For example, simply adding a galaxy background to a desert scene, or changing the colors of mountains in the distance. So the maximum I would spend on a program would depend on how much they usually run, and what the benefits of each are. Since like I mentioned, I'm not looking to photoshop any people, more landscapes, I am unsure whether there are programs that do such better than others. Though for a specific price, is under 300-250$ a reasonable expectation?
Haha you're welcome, I really do appreciate your help!

Hmm correct me if I'm wrong, but you're basically not looking to manipulate the people (besides maybe enhancing the quality if necessary), but you'd like to replace backgrounds? To me, that's still a manipulation since you may have to change the foreground (where the people usually are) to match the background so it doesn't look like they are just copied and pasted. And even if that's not the case, changing the background of the picture into a different background is still a manipulation. Of course, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong. Of course, if you are talking about programs like SnapChat (well I think that's a website, but hopefully you know what I mean), where they do the effects for you, I have no knoweldge about programs like that (my apologies ). Anyway, as for programs that could do this, I'll start with free options:

- GIMP : As I told you before, GIMP is very similar to Photoshop. However, there are still many features that Photoshop has (especially recent versions) that GIMP does not have, so keep that in mind. Also, some people who are new to the digital arts say that they had a hard time getting used to the software. I personally did not share this experience. It was the first program I used to make digital art and it was quite straight forward to me. If there was something I needed help with I'd just look up a tutorial. To be fair, everyone has a different experience so I'd thought I'd tell you that just in case. You can enhance or manipulate photos as well as create artwork from scratch using brushes, patterns, etc. Also, like many programs it has a big library of plugins that can be useful. It also has a big community so that's always a plus. The main negative for this program is that it updates pretty slowly. GIMP was first announced in 1995 and had version 1.0 come out in 1998. Fast forward to today it's only on version 2.8.22. Still a good program altogether though.

- PixBuilder Studio : I'll be honest and say that I've never used this program. It does look like it doesn't have as many features as GIMP, but it does look like it can do what you described to me. I can barely find any reviews on this software so I can't say how good it is. I'd say try it out and see if you like it, if not just uninstall it. It's fine if you feel like skipping it too, but I thought I'd show you just in case it works for you.

now on to the commercial products:

- Photoshop Elements : a more stripped down version of Photoshop, but it should do everything you're looking for. I believe you don't have to have a subscription (monthly payments) to use this software. Plus it could be a stepping stone to becoming familiar to the full version of Photoshop if that's a software you want to get in the future. Thankfully it's in your price range .

- Photo Pos Pro Premium : This is more of what people call a freemium product. It has a free version, but there is also a premium version that has more features. So to save money, I'd say download the free version, see if you like it, and if you do possibly buy the premium version that has more features. Of course, if you're super happy with the free version then there may be no need to buy the full version. The good thing about this one is I know for sure that you can replace backgrounds using this software! If you plan on buying it here is a link to purchase the full version: shopper.mycommerce.com/checkou…

- ON1 Photo Raw : Another one I'm unfamiliar with, but looks like it's quite good for professional use. If you have a camera that shoots in the RAW format, then this program looks like one of the best editing tools for you (although it does support other image formats like JPEG). It is a steep price, but it's like having Lightroom and Photoshop for way cheaper the price (again just guessing since I never used it). This program also has a free version if you want to try it out. Just remember the free version is quite limited. If you do like the free version I'd recommend buying it since unlike Photo Pos Pro, the differences between the free and premium version seems to be bigger.

- PaintShop Pro : Ok one more left. This one seems to be a decent rival to Photoshop according to some and is WWWWWAAAAAYYYYYY cheaper. In fact, because of deals this month, it's the second cheapest thing on this list. Although it doesn't have a stand alone free version, it does have a free trial so you can try that out and see how you like it. Just remember the discount is for a Limited Time, so it won't be as cheap after the deal is over, but it's still less than $100. The link takes you to the ultimate version since the deal makes it cheaper than the regular version.

Ok, I'll stop here. Sorry this took me about a good hour or so to find the software I didn't know about . Tried to narrow it down to what you were looking for. I hope I succeeded . Also, for future reference, this website helps you find alternatives to software quite easily. In fact, if you are looking for a free version of a popular expensive software like say Adobe Illustrator, you type it in, click on "any license", select Free and Open Source (or just Open Source) and then a list of similar programs will pop up. You can also select which Operating system you are looking for as well. It's not perfect, but it has helped me out over the years . I this list helps you with what you are looking for! Best of luck
