i keep trying with apophysis and don't get many nice fractals.
is there somewhere that explains all the different triangles and the values?

Unfortunately I'm not good enough to make an advanced tutorial.
Really I just go by trial and error. But if I had to guess I'd say that the triangles and values set the variables of the repeating shape and the pattern in which it repeats.
Fractals are math based after all.
