Description
Spanish sailing ships venture down the watery avenues of Times Square, New York and discover The New World.I wanted to create an alternative moment when Christopher Columbus discovers The New World.
Because of the POV and high resolution I was working with, I couldnt find any appropriate photostock so I had to work from textures found at cgtextures.com to build a plate that I could then paint over using photoshop.
textures from cgtextures.com to help create my plate.
Enjoy

F*CKING GOLD,I LIKE THIS IDEA Litwo, Ojczyzno moja! ty jesteś jak zdrowie;
Ile cię trzeba cenić, ten tylko się dowie,
Kto cię stracił. Dziś piękność twą w całej ozdobie
Widzę i opisuję, bo tęsknię po tobie.
Panno święta, co Jasnej bronisz Częstochowy
I w Ostrej świecisz Bramie! Ty, co gród zamkowy
Nowogródzki ochraniasz z jego wiernym ludem!
Jak mnie dziecko do zdrowia powróciłaś cudem
(— Gdy od płaczącej matki, pod Twoją opiekę
Ofiarowany martwą podniosłem powiekę;
I zaraz mogłem pieszo, do Twych świątyń progu
Iść za wrócone życie podziękować Bogu —)
Tak nas powrócisz cudem na Ojczyzny łono!...
Tymczasem, przenoś moją duszę utęsknioną
Do tych pagórków leśnych, do tych łąk zielonych,
Szeroko nad błękitnym Niemnem rozciągnionych;
Do tych pól malowanych zbożem rozmaitem,
Wyzłacanych pszenicą, posrebrzanych żytem;
Gdzie bursztynowy świerzop, gryka jak śnieg biała,
Gdzie panieńskim rumieńcem dzięcielina pała,
A wszystko przepasane jakby wstęgą, miedzą
Zieloną, na niej zrzadka ciche grusze siedzą.

Wow, talk about twisting and turning... Modern-day USA in a Post-Apocalypse state found by Christopher Columbus over 500 years ago as a result of... Hmm, time travel gone very wrong? Reality being tampered with? A planetary disaster on a level that bits and pieces of the world we know are shifted to different times and places? The possibilities go on. Would there have been survivors and, if so, what happened to them? The artwork is fantastic and the possibilities endless. Keep up the good work.

Thank you. I was really trying to think of ideas for my portfolio at the time and I was experimenting with mixing two opposing themes that could also be tied together somehow. I've kinda stuck with that experiment for my personal work ever since. You did touch on the story concept but as always, gotta keep the mystery alive and let the illustration tell the story.

it's a very fascinating idea and well executed, but aren't the ships a bit high on the water ?
Not that I really know anything about sailships but I would instinctively have expected a greater part of their hull to be submersed; as it is it startles me and seems to me to destroy the general composition of the scene

Hey, cheers for feedback. I don't recall exactly my references for this piece, but here are some examples of caravels on water and seeing how high their hulls appear in the water.

Awesome idea and awesome artwork, dude.
Writing on a novel like that myself.
Only it's neither US nor 'East India' my Columbus discovers...
It's Atlantis; and the locals are none too happy about it

No, but it does have photographic elements- textures. It was pretty much impossible for me to get a photograph at this height as a plate to work from so I had to create a plate from scratch using textures from cgtextures to build up the view. I studied the architecture of Times Square, New York to see what textures fit and painted in areas I couldnt match. It took some effort.

Mmm, it's very nice~ I might just a feeling that maybe the ships should swim a bit deeper, but that is no big problem. I love the reflexion on the windows there...

Hi, I originally thought the same about the ships, but studying from reference pics proved otherwise.
