Freedom FightersChapter Twenty-Four: First Move of Chess
In a base on the outskirts of New York...
A pair of military soldiers paced the hallway as they waited for their leader's command. Suddenly the teenage skunk walked out of a room holding a sharp knife. He walked towards a room silently and the soldiers followed. The skunk walked into the room and then went towards a desk. He was in the newly made General's office. The soldiers stood in front of the desk, waiting silently for his command as he stared at the desk in deep thought. Suddenly and unexpectedly, he threw the knife he was holding straight ahead of him, with a soldier standing there. The soldier moved with quick agility and reflexes and became wide-eyed at what General Kain tried to do to him. Slowly he pointed at something behind the soldier. "We attack there." he commanded bluntly. The soldiers turned around to see the knife that he threw embedded into a map of New York on the wall.
The knife was pointing out from Stanton Island. The soldiers looked back at the General as he clasped his hands together and put them in front of his mouth as he sat down. "Get ready to move out." he ordered swiftly. "Yes sir." the soldiers replied in unison and left the room. "Finally decided on when to play chess huh?" a female voice asked. The skunk looked over slowly to see the red vixen with her arms crossed and smirking. "What do you want American? You're already pissing me off. Don't make me kill you. I am not as merciful as my father. The years had made him weak and soft. I, however, have no sympathy for the weak. So make sure you remember not to test my patience." Kain said. The red vixen kept silent as she saw the serious look in the teenage skunk's eyes. "Right..." she replied and left the room. Kain looked back at the map and saw the combat knife that was still in it. He sighed, stood up, and then walked over to the map. 'It's time to bring out this full-scale war to an end.' he thought and yanked the knife out of the map.
In a base on Stanton Island...
A purple feline with a wrench in her hand wiped her forehead as she looked back at a husky white dog. "How long before we have the new antenna up and running?" the feline asked. The husky dog closed a panel on the wall and then flipped a switch. He looked back at the feline and then grinned, "Right now." he answered and suddenly the walkie-talkie on the feline's belt began to chirp. "Perfect. now we should be able to get into contact with other fighters, if there are any." she said. "Of course Melissa. There's no way we could have survived this long without some type of help from the city. Unless you think about how many groups were taken down from one of the fire fights." the husky said. "Well Charles, how do you think we can get in contact with them? Even though our antenna works now, we still need the different frequency codes to get in touch with them." the feline asked after putting her hands on her hips. "Hold on hold on, I'll actually find some way to reach them. I'm sure it's not that hard to get into contact with them." Charles said. The feline only looked out the window, put her elbow on the window sill, rested her chin on her hand and sighed, "I hope so... I miss being a part of the city. We have no way to get back on land... and I don't know how to swim..." she whispered. Charles lowered his eyes to the floor as he thought about how the few that were left behind couldn't swim, "Yeah I know Melissa... I know..." he said.
Slowly the two heard a noise and tried to listen more distinctly. The two heard a low humming sound coming from outside. Suddenly another fighter ran into the room panting as he pointed at something at the sky. "Russian choppers... coming this way." he panted. A few fighters began to grab weapons from a container and then ran outside. Melissa and Charles grabbed an assault rifle from the table next to them and then rushed outside. They already saw soldiers zipping down a line to reach the ground and were firing from the military helicopter above them. Melissa and Charles ran for cover as they returned fire onto the helicopter. Two more helicopters glided down from the side and then landed near an opening. More soldiers jumped out of the helicopter and some fighters tried to fire back. Most of them were gunned down as Charles looked over at the scared but fighting feline. "Melissa, I'll cover you, you go and try to find any frequency that can call for help." the husky dog yelled to the feline. The feline began to quiver as she knew the obvious result of what she was told to do. "But Charles, what about you?" she asked in a scared tone. "Don't worry about me! Go!" he yelled. Melissa only closed her eyes and ran back into the building. The husky dog noticed the soldiers getting closer and continued shooting. 'Come on Melissa... please make it in time.' he thought.
The feline ran through the main room and made it into the back room. She turned on the radio and began to move the dial rapidly to find a good signal. She picked up a reciever and began to speak into it frantically. "Hello? Can anyone hear me? Please, someone answer back. We're under attack; I repeat we're under attack!" she shouted frantically as she looked back towards the door. She continued turning the dial as she continued talking into the reciever. "Please... anyone. We need help. This base is under attack by Russian soldiers and we don't know if we can hold out much longer." she said.
In a base on Coney Island...
A pink hedgehog who wore a black cape along with black leather gloves with chains around her wrists sighed as she looked at the table bankly in front of her. She also had baggy black pants with a very dark red ripped sleeveless shirt. Her dark blue eyes went calm as she thought of old memories. Suddenly the radio in front of her began to beep. "Can anyone hear me?" the radio asked. The pink hedgehog picked up her reciever and pressed a button. "I can hear you? This is Shea. What's going on?" the pink echidna asked.
In the Village Barrier's base...
"Come on, you gotta eat." Seath said as she held the spoon in front of Kaleb's face. "I will, I just don't want to be spoon fed..." then he turned away and blushed, "Especially by you..." he said. Seath only giggled as she almost shoved some food into his mouth, "Well too bad; you need to eat." she said and smiled. Kaleb began chewing the food as he looked at his arms wrapped in a cast. Then he sighed as he thought about dealing with being taken care of like a baby for a few days. Suddenly they heard the radio began to beep and two voices were speaking. "We're at Stanton Island, I don't think we can hold out any longer." a female said. "Well, you'll have to wait about an hour or two." another female said. Seath went to the radio and picked up the reciever. "Just hang in there... we'll try to get there." she said.
In the Harlem Armada's base...
Midnight had his eyes closed as he was sitting in a chair thinking about what he was going to do if the Russians deciced to attack again. "So how are you doing Midnight?" a female asked. Midnight opened his eyes and looked up to see Crystal. "I'm doing fine, though something is on my mind. What if those soldiers try to get more spies to try and take down the resistance from the inside?" he asked. Crystal only rubbed her chin and looked up to the ceiling, "I really don't know. We'll just have to believe in the ones we really trust. Right now I gotta fill out more paperwork, so I'm sure you can look after the lobby." she said and then walked away. Suddenly the radio beeped and then he heard three female voices. "I don't think we have an hour. We need help now. I don't think we will make it." a female said. Midnight walked over to the radio and then picked up the reciever. "So where are you?" he asked.
In the Liberty Rogues' base...
PJ looked around as she saw Tonya sleeping on the couch silently and Tamarind looking something up on the computer. Jay was in the interrogation room messing with his cam corder. PJ thought about how she got into this situation and she sighed. "And all I was doin was tryin to get home from college..." she whispered to herself. Tamarind slowly got off of the computer and then stretched and yawned. "PJ you can watch over the lobby for a sec, I'm going to the restroom." the white rabbit said. "Ok, will do." the orange vixen replied. The white rabbit walked out of the room as PJ stood up and began to walk around the room. Suddenly she heard the radio beep and she walked over to it. She heard multiple voices talking as she got closer. "We're trying to assemble a team right now, just hold tight. And you said you're at Stanton Island?" a male asked. "Yes, at Stanton Island, I don't think you'll be able to make it in time. The Russians are attacking harshly and not giving us any chances to even do anything." a female voice said. PJ picked up the reciever and then pressed a button. "How many of them are there?" she asked. "There are about two hundred of them on the island now." she answered. "Well hold on just a little bit longer. We'll come as fast as we can." another female voice said. There was a deadly silence on the other side as they tried to hear a response from the feline. "Are you there?" PJ called out. "Melissa?" another female called out.
At the base in Stanton Island...
"Melissa... respond." the radio said. But the feline's eyes were wide as she began choking up blood and dropped the reciever. Kain pulled the long sword out of her from behind and she dropped to the floor below her. "Melissa?" a voice called out from the radio. "Looks like you tried to get some help from the other weak rebels. But don't worry, I will eradicate them from existence as I did with your pathetic friends." Kain said. Melissa slightly turned her head to see the husky at the front door on the ground. "Nooo.... Charles..." she called out and tried to crawl to him. "Good bye weak American." Kain said and then shot the feline in her back. The extreme pain ripped through her body, and she became still. "We have taken this base. Make sure we take the others just like this one." the general said. "Melissa." someone called out again. He pointed his pistol at the radio and shot it, destroying it in one blow. "And make sure to try and scramble their communication." he ordered. "Yes sir." the soldiers answered and walked out the room quickly. "I've made the first move, I just know I'll make the last one too." the skunk said to himself.
