They'll tell you that you
must wear green on this
particular holiday
from across the sea,
but give no good reason
beyond some distinctly
American nonsense
about not getting
pinched.

I've been told by a
most reliable source,
a Scottish comedian,
that the real story
is much older and much
odder than you know.

Wearing green, so the story
goes, keeps you hidden
from the Little People,
known to some as Leprechauns.

Armed with this knowledge,
while I love the color
green and wear it often,
on this day I never
do.

Some say this is because
I know Leprechauns
are not real, and I refuse
to join in superstitious
paranoia.

Others say it's because
I know the Little People
are real, and that they can
and do use magic to cause
much mischief, but I have
magic aplenty of my
own, and the little
punks know better than to
mess with me.

Yet others say it's because
I know they are real, but
also know there's no need
to worry, as any
self-respecting Leprechaun
will be too busy on this
day getting good and drunk
to cause much mischief
anyway.

I'll let you decide which
answer most resembles
truth.
