In the perfect world that existed in another time, there was no such thing as negativity. It had all been banished away in the darkened nature reserves, sealed away from the bright city lights and any human contact. It had been forgotten about, and humanity was happy. Happiness and glee was all anyone could feel. It was pure bliss, a utopia.

However, just getting something away from your line of sight does not cause you to be rid of it entirely.

It remains and lingers still, just as the forbidden negativity did.

The hidden emotions swirled in the heart of that forest, condensing and combining, creating a creature. The creature only knew suffering, fear, sorrow, and a great anger. It did not think, but emotions are powerful, and can create their own thoughts without a functioning brain. The monster’s only thoughts were simple questions.

“Why?” it would think. “Why did I need to be made? Why were my parts thrown away? Why do the humans get the best while I am what I am?”

They were passing thoughts that did not stay long. It was probably for the better too, as the monster only grew more irritable when it thought.

It would take out its pain on its surroundings, destroying much of what little nature was left. No one dared to get close enough to repair the damage, and the reserve was quickly abandoned and blocked off due to “negativity hazards.” It was a place that reeked of wickedness, and not a single person dared to get closer than a yard to the barriers.

This was for good reason, but humanity has a record of being stupid.

Theresa was a curious girl who—like all others—knew no fear. She just wanted to see why the reserve was blocked off and maybe scout for salvageable items while she was at it. She figured if she wanted to, she could get rid of whatever was making the place sick.

And so she went, climbing over the barriers set in place years ago and being the first human to step into the reserve in a little over a decade. Almost the very second she walked into the reserve, she felt something new to her—dread. With that came uneasiness and a slight bit of fear. Still, she was determined to complete her task, so she pressed onwards. In fact, the new sensations only made her more excited. She’d have quite the story to tell when she got home!

The feelings only increased the deeper she got. The idea of leaving crossed her mind many times, but every time she shook it off. She wasn’t going anywhere. If she was going to quit, she would have never jumped the hurdle. The trees around her became gradually more dead and torn up. The grass became dry, flowers shriveled up into dry husks of their former beauty, and the air itself seemed to grow stale. It was like Theresa was watching the entire sanctuary die right in front of her.

When she got to the middle, there was a clearing. The clearing was completely dead—stumps and logs littered the patches of grass that had been torn up and thrown about. Late bushes and blossoms were scattered all over the dirt, ripped into small pieces of debris that pricked at Theresa’s bare feet as she walked.

She felt a presence when she reached the exact center. The slight fear suddenly spiked, making the unfamiliar girl feel like her heart would explode. She clutched her chest and fell to her knees as something stirred in one of the only intact logs in the general area. A creature seemingly made of black and purple fog slowly flowed out of the log, manifesting right in front of her and opening its bright reddish-amber eyes when it was completed.

The monster was a little bit surprised. It had not seen a human ever since it was a bunch of smaller “bad” feelings that were normal parts of life. Now it stood before a human as a single “bad” feeling—as a horrific nightmare monster that was only told of as a fun little story.

The monster stood for a while, observing Theresa as she soaked in the excess negativity it gave off…then it smiled. It smiled for the first time. It smiled widely and wickedly. The girl was like a fly in its web, completely and utterly helpless. Now it could show the world that it was not a force to store away and ignore.

When Theresa left, she was no longer herself. She was a puppet of the beast she and so many others had created. The creature used her to escape and spent its time spreading its disease and crushing the excessive happiness that had tipped the natural scale. While the beast was at it, it might as well tip the scale in its favor instead.

The perfect world of another time experienced a tonal shift that day, going from utopia to dystopia seemingly overnight.

Civilizations fell. There was mass panic and riots as the world had never seen. The streets were forever painted red with the blood of the many, many unlucky ones. Rain fell like tears to accompany the new atmosphere as the population of the planet suddenly took a nosedive due to anything one could think of and more.

Negativity is a strong force, especially when it has its time to pile up.
