Description Lookie! Actual artness

Anyhoo... I want to enter the contest over at #ArtisanCraft , because the topic is Greek/Roman... and since I, you know, teach Greek and Latin, it seemed like the perfect topic for me. I chose Athena because my dissertation is on an Athenian festival, the Panathenaia, in honor of Athena Polias.

I've got an old piece of canvas, not left over but from a yarnless kit I picked up just to get the canvas. It's probably over 15 years old now. So I thought it was about time I put it to use. It's got a usable field of 101x76 holes, so that was the size I limited myself to for the pattern. I've also got a bunch of gray yarn cut, from back when I was planning on doing a gray version of Cinderella Castle, but since I've now decided on a blue castle, I've got tons o'useless gray cut yarn. So gray color scheme. I haven't decided on the background color yet. I'll have to cut the yarn regardless. Her dress would have been yellow (saffron, actually), just to let you know. And let's all remember she's the patroness of Athens, so no, that is not a Spartan helmet.

She is called the Mourning Athena, by the way [link] . I got a picture of her in the Akropolis museum while I was in Athens in 2005. I used my picture as the reference. No copyright worries, since the piece is nearly 2500 years old now. That's her spear she's resting her head on.

It took about an hour to get the basic design, but about six to actually make the pattern (made in Photoshop Elements 4). My back hurts now.

The contest is due in exactly a month, so that's how long I've got to latch it. I can probably get it done in a few days if I force myself.

This pattern is free for all to use, providing I am credited as the maker and no money is earned.

Thanks Jared

It's exactly 40% latched at the moment. I'll hopefully have it done in a few days.

You're welcome, Tina! That's pretty good, then! Good luck on finishing it in a few days! I think you'll be a little ahead of schedule (unless the contest ends on Nov. 1).

I've got to have it done by the 16th, so I'm doing pretty good.

Yes, you are! How many hours have you worked on it so far? Or do you not pay very close attention to that sort of thing?

It takes about 15 minutes to do one 10x10 block, and I've done about, um, ... 31 blocks so far? Maybe about 8 hours then?

Ah, I see. At least you can make steady progress.

How does the process go? I've never made a rug before, aside from helping my grandma make one on one of those...machine things (completely forgot the name...oops...).

Well, for a latched rug you start with a canvas and yarn cut about 2 inches long. You then fold the yarn over the hook, thread it through the canvas, and hook it through, one hole at a time. You can see my Kitchen Rug in progress here: [link] if that helps with what it looks like

And machine things? You mean like a loom? I'd love to learn how to weave sometime.

Ah, okay. That's cool. I can see why it'd take awhile, though.

Yes! A loom. Those are pretty cool to see people use.

Thank you

I actually looked at a few pictures of ancient mosaics, but I'd need a much bigger canvas to do those justice. It is hard to force a design into the little squares. It's like pixel art on a huge scale

Yeah, about seven hours

mmpratt99 In reply to AreteEirene [2007-10-19 19:05:35 +0000 UTC]

That's pretty short compared to what it takes to weave a Persian rug.

7 hours is how long it took to make the pattern. It'll take approximately 20 hours to latch, given my usual rate of 4 10x10 blocks in an hour. It's a small rug for me, pretty quick.

AreteEirene In reply to 5-Shots-Of-Life [2007-10-17 23:37:04 +0000 UTC]

But this is ATHENS!!!!!

I loved the movie but I was a little insulted by the potshots they took at Athens, especially since what Leonidas accused the Athenians of (pederasty), he was rather fond of himself, historically speaking. And the fact that the end made it seem like it was Sparta that beat the Persians, at Plataea, which is true in the sense that they won the battle, but it was the Athenians at Salamis that won the war. Just another movie I'll have to erase from my students' minds because of it's inaccuracy. "Troy" was bad enough.

Sorry for the rant

I know, it was a good movie to go and watch for violence and gore, though. It gave me my "half naked men killing things" fix. I'll never complain about hal naked men, though ;D

you're so lucky you got to go to Athens. I want to travel but don't have away to get around yet. I want to see Italy, Ireland, and Transylvania

Thank you

I should make more patterns... or at least get the few I've got on graph paper transferred digitally.

Athens has so much to do, but damn it was hot in July. Next time I think I'll go in the winter. I'd love to get to so many places. Maybe one day we'll both have the $$$!
