The challenge was: "The character lets a demon change one day in their life".
When i was drawing this a while ago, it all made sense in my head. Now that i think about it - not so much.
Anyway, the point here was that even if Samson somehow managed to save Maddox from being turned tranquil (by refusing to deliver his letters, for example), he (Maddox) would have become possessed during the Kirkwall uprising... because that's how lucky a person Samson is.
