Julius ( Ox-Xeon ) honors a request made to them by Ars FavilaJulius Journal Day 29
You there, reader... what makes a moment precious? This isn't a trick question; your first guess is probably the right one. Here's my answer.
(This is Julius' personal journal, but the books that they publish are derived from their field notes, so sometimes, they may address a "reader").
1. The moment can't last forever.
2. The moment must be memorable and it must bring you joy.
3. The moment needs to be difficult, if not impossible to re-create.
The Soot Roc Moth represents the imago form of the Soot Wriggler . The life of a Soot Roc Moth is a fleeting thing, lasting only 5 years on average; a blink of an eye compared to all of the ageless beings in this universe. Those who choose to raise a Soot Roc Moth will dote on it for the first two years of its life. It's around year three that they'll begin spinning the silk that this planet is well known for, then some time near the end of year three, they form a cocoon, before emerging as a Soot Roc Moth.
Soot Roc Moth serve as one of the safest ways to travel about Aha-Bahdon. Not only are their scales are noxious to predators such as the Ash Dragon, they are far more tenacious than their looks might suggest. While the Ash Dragon has the edge in terms of speed and maneuverability, the Soot Roc Moth comes out on top in terms of strength and lift, due to its broad wings. When the two clash, Soot Roc Moths are known to grapple Ash Dragons and drag them towards altitudes that they cannot handle. This tactic, combined with their nauseating scales makes them one opponent that the Ash Dragon prefers not to take on. You care for them for the majority of their lives, and they spend their final days caring for you. It's said that for the sake of protecting the one who raised them, a Soot Roc Moth will never back down from a fight.
When their lives near their end, female Soot Roc Moths will entrust her eggs to the one who raised her. While most insects produce eggs numbering in the hundreds, Soot Roc Moths never lay more than three. While other insects rely on large numbers to ensure the continuation of their species, Soot Roc Moths bet it all on the relationships that they form with the inhabitants of Aha-Bahdon.
Days before a Soot Roc Moth senses that it will pass away, it flies off to die in solitude, perhaps not wishing for it's owner to feel sorrow. The idea that an insect might have such an in-depth understanding of emotion is truly remarkable.
As expressed by Ars Favila:
"One never forgets a Soot Roc Moth after raising one; for years after there gone, you'll still be wearing the clothes made from the silk that they spun for you, and you'll still be wearing the jewelry made from the shells of the eggs that they hatched from. The repellent that we use to keep Ash Dragons at bay is extracted from their scales. It's almost as if they are watching over us from the grave. And though we go on to raise their offspring after they are gone, no two are ever quite the same."

Arren's Journal
Jules seems kind of lost in thought, writing up a storm over there. If it wasn't for N.E.B.D, they'd of probably fell off this building by now. We're in Sentina City honoring the request of one of Jules's friends, Favila. Had to track down this moth that the guy raised and see her off. Way he explains it, she don't got the ability to eat anymore after coming out of her cocoon, and now her time's commin. Sad stuff I tell ya, and I should know; I've seen some tragic stuff in my day. He predicted that she'd choose to die at sea, and sure enough, we found this old girl perched on a building staring out into the ocean. Apparently her names "Somni", and Jules is gonna raise one of her eggs. The guy, Favila, wanted to make sure Somni was fine with it, and I think she approves; that's the vibe I'm gettin anyways. Favila thinks that Jules will be the one to figure out a way to extend the lives of this species of moth. Well Somni, if anyone can figure out a way to ensure that your baby lives a long life, it'll be Jules. I'd bet my kingdom on it.
