"No one is entitled to be ignorant."
Self-confident and mysterious, appreciative but destructive, intimidating but trustworthy, decisive but judgmental, determined but arrogant.
He's simple, to put it well... simply. Blunt and straightforward, the zebra seems to lack a complex history or hidden trauma. He isn't your lost soul trying to discover who he is and never has been.
Bix is quiet to those who he doesn't view as important. This opinion is usually one gathered within the first impression. He leads his life by a strict moral code (partially from his mother, the other part from himself and his experiences). He immediately comes off as intimidating and aloof, despite his short stature. His gaze is one of silence and usually condensed rage. Bix's job is to be on the trails. He cares very little if your talk doesn't involve his job.
He views friendships as rather useless endeavors. When he and a fellow ranger travel together, it is usually in silence. Any partner who is chatty will be endured for a short amount of time before Bix expresses his opinion shortly and never sweetly. He no longer travels with Nappa. EVER.
As far as Rangers go, Bix has a great number of miles under his hooves. Unfortunately for him, this means traveling with chatty new recruits more often than not. He endures.
It stressful situations, Bix takes control. He gives orders to his partner immediately and works well under pressure. Physical injuries do not seem phase him and he is quite strong for his small stature. He is capable of putting his own anxieties and stress on hold until the threat has passed. This is not a natural trait of his, but rather something Bix worked hard to achieve. Self-control is one of the higher points on his moral code.
Almost unknown to everyone is the zebra's soft side toward youth and baking. He is surprisingly fatherly toward foals but will only show when no one else is around. If there is a crowd Bix will remain removed and practical.
His love for baking happens in the craft. The zebra enjoys working on desserts but loves breadmaking most because of the process involved. Oftentimes when spending the night on the road with a family and not at a Ranger Station, the family can expect to wake in the morning with Bix and his partner already gone, but fresh bread or a delicious dessert waiting for them as a sign of appreciation.
ARCHITECT PERSONALITY (INTJ, -A/-T)
History(Bix does not share much about himself with anyone. His history is kept very quiet.)
The zebra colt was born as the first child of a war-forged zebra couple. They lived in a small herding clan on the eastern cliffs of the farmlands. The boy was raised around long-horned ibex which the clan used for wool. Early on, he was taught to protect the flock; how to hunt with a both a bow and spear. The clan flourished and celebrated their diversity from the other clans with colorful textiles that were then sold or traded for other resources. A young Bix knew who and what he was, or so he thought.
Destined to become another herder and protector of the flock, the child spent his free time wrestling the large male goats or racing his friends over the rocks in trials of surefootedness. From the other herders, he learned to track and to name the wildlife around himself.
Confident and strong, Bix was the adventure-seeker of the group. This sometimes meant galloping into the nearby creek as a disturbed beehive lay in the dirt or pulling thistles out of his hide when a certain feat of agility went awry. No matter what, however, he was always sure to get his friends to safety before himself. The boy was naturally protective.
His education was led by the local Caenna, a teacher who traveled between the small local clans in exchange for goods. Once the child knew how to read, he seemed fascinated by technical writings. Books on breadmaking were his first choice. His writing developed into something easily legible, like that of a builder or carpenter, though mathematics seemed an uphill battle for him.
Bix was 18 when he met nomadic equines for the first time. The two traders had been traveling along a local road and some of the clan went to meet them.
Hardly older than he was, the two were delivering mail to Skelder Town. Bix nearly begged to join them on their half-day journey there. They agreed to his company after his family nodded their acceptance.
The short trip was spent deep in conversation. Their names were Graphite and Moss. The two young equines were barely older than he was, which captured the imagination of a young Bix. They explained their work and goal as traders and occassional mail carriers. They had traveled all over the continent, seen so many different places!
It was on his trip back home that Bix decided to become one of them.
He spent the next two years preparing.
At first, it seemed that his father wasn't pleased with his first-born's choice. Daily, he would attempt to belittle them in Bix's mind. Explaining that nomadic traders prayed to no god and lived under no rule, that they were nearly vagabonds. But Bix refused to yield, always able to combat his father.
In order to ready himself, Bix woke before the sunrise. He would travel the local roads and paths, then go off to the rocky hillsides to practice. He would visit Skelder Town on occasion to study books about the other parts of Hireath. He spoke with wise individuals to learn the flora and fauna of his home and places unknown to him.
Despite his high hopes and dedication, Bix's father refused to allow him to leave. A confrontation ensued, but Bix stood down, assuming the role of a herder after all. He was 19 when the Bloody Flanks attempted the coup and Hira took control of the War Forged. Times were changing, and Bix decided he was needed at home more than ever.
The following years began to pass in a blur. His dream snuffed out, Bix became stoic and dutiful.
The work of a herder is spent following the herds and keeping them safe, but the zebra made sure to return home and tend to his family when he could.
As a silent protest against his father, Bix refused to marry. The burden of carrying on the family name would be destined to his younger siblings. This choice drove a deeper wedge between the two.
When his father died, Bix disappeared.
They had been trying to get the herd to higher ground as flood waters rose during an unusually rainy season. Bix and his three younger siblings were driving the ibex upward, where their old sire stood. The hill and its rocks were slick in the driving rain and when they all had made it to the top, the ground beneath their hooves gave way.
The mudslide dragged Bix, his family, and part of the herd half a mile down the hill and attempted to bury them all under mud and rocks.
He returned home with two of his brothers, dragging behind his injured youngest sibling and their sire.
While his young brother recovered, their father did not. The old stallion died of his wounds and a suspected case of pneumonia he hadn't spoken of.
Now 39, Bix was expected to assume the role of his sire in the family.
But he didn't.
Making it known to his eldest brother, Bix left their small clan for Skelder Town following the burial of his father. He was finally free.
It was there that he met Baheera. A member of the Midwives guild, the zebra convinced her to allow him to shadow. It wasn't easy.
The stubby little woman was incredibly sharp and fierce for her short size. She remained suspicious of a stallion shadowing a midwife until Bix explained his delayed dream of becoming a trader and therefore a horse of the road. She was the first (and one of the only) equines he opened up to and in his honesty, Baheera let some of her walls down.
The two became friends as Bix learned the ins and outs of midwifing.
In the back of his mind, he began to feel a small hesitation. The disorienting smile of the little spotted unicorn through her tusks would be something he was bound to miss. She was strong enough to fend for herself, but something in him called to protect her. It was a different feeling than protecting the herd of ibex or his family, this felt like a noble duty he could step into.
He considered staying, considered finding work in Skelder, with her. Maybe she wasn't the most successful mare in Onea, but she was dutiful and would make a steadfast companion. Bix was about to ask when she was married off to some winged little runt.
So he left, once again. He bid Baheera and her... husband farewell shortly after the union. The unicorn mare promised he would always have a place in her home if his hooves ever found him back in Onea. Bix dipped his head to her before leaving, his heart torn.
Bix followed the War Lord's path before he came upon two traveling horses. They spoke of a new system in Hireath and the zebra nodded his head with a smile. At long last, the Rangers were finally just beginning.
He was an impressive recruit, muscular and fit, with strong hooves and an unshakable attitude. His oath to the Rangers was to serve all of Hireath and its lands, along with those who travel it. He found duty in serving them, feeling that he belonged to no herd or leader, but was able to serve them all equally. The Rangers became his home, and he, the stoic and knowledgeable companion.
Since joining, Bix has visited nearly every corner of the content. Proving himself an ideal ranger, the zebra gets his work done effectively. He doesn't speak much and instead enjoys traveling the roads in silence to better take in his surroundings. The experiences he had shadowing a midwife have already proven useful as well.
His past buried deep behind him, Bix will continue on with his work as a Hireath Ranger, work he thoroughly enjoys doing.
In-Game History
Chapter VI Bix | Chapter 6 Plot
Bix aids two vagabonds into Sedo, only to meet a nomadic group seeking refuge from the coming war in the Oasis. When confronted with the possibility of raiding an Aodhian militant camp, the Ranger refuses. Instead, he guides a father and two children the long way around. Bix understand he has no place in politics, but the thought of a war rubs him the wrong way. He fears the destruction of land and creatures. He does not enter the Oasis and is therefore not sealed inside. He later prays to his goddess for a blessing that he hopes will help him protect his world from the war.
Chapter VII
With Lethe as a partner, Bix acts as an escort for two Breimians on their visit to the mysterious Bone Tower. They are greeted and joined by a small handful of vagabonds, all of whome the zebra refuses to respect. He is driven on his mission as an escort until they reach the Forest of Bone and are greeted by a strange Ursa who seems to desire to lead them somewhere. Bix moves to follow her and the forest closes in around those who stay behind, darkness forcing them to follow the Ursa as well. The bear leads the group to the Tower of Bone. Bix is transfixed and visibly unsettled, trying his best to snuff out the feeling of dread crawling up his spine. He instructs the bremians not to touch the structure, though it appears to swell and breathe. They touch it anyway.
In the presence of the ungod, Digend, Bix is completely taken aback. His head spins and his instincts scream to run and fight at the same time. It feels as though reality is splitting and the zebra can hardly handle it. For the first time in his life, Bix it truly terrified. When the ungod leaves them and the great storm dissipates, the group heads back to The Point. Bix is silent the entire way, his eyes squinted in thought and his nostrils wide. At the completion of his mission, he heads back toward Serora, hoping the journey will clear his mind and help him find some sort of closure. It doesn't.
Code of Conduct
- Have control over yourself or have nothing
- Stallions and mares are not the same, but are mostly capable of doing the same things
- One is only as good as their word. Lying is not acceptable.
- The world around one is to be respected and preserved.
- Friends, not necessary.
- Talking is only useful when it's important.
- Honor. You have it or you don't.
- Take what is yours
- Be frank or be nothing.
- Romantic Love
- Give 100%. 110% is impossible and idiotic.
- Teamwork. If you must work together, work as if your life depends on it.
- True success is only gained through hard work
- Eat only when hungry, such is the nature of the wild
- Good whiskey is essential
Opinions on the Herds
- War-Forged: not as clever as other herds, definitely the strongest, might visit Baheera eventually
- Aodh: pompous, thin-skinned, a bit fun to intimidate, food is too fancy, bedding is very lavish
- Breim: a bit strange, always smell of the ground, intelligent
- Talori: fish, warm waters, fascinating flavors, memories are foggy of other details
- Serora: inviting and hospitable to Rangers, sparse but good food
- Vagabonds: depends on who you're meeting, stay clear of cultists and that scaled monster with the golden axe
Familiar: MuttThe hyena pup is a brand new addition to the Ranger's pack. He had asked a vagabond familiar trader that a hyena be set aside for him the next time his hooves found him around. Llittle did Bix know the hyena wouldn't be full grown. The pup was just old enough to be weaned from her mother and already an excellent hunter, skilled enough to be able to fend for herself if need be. She was handed to a disgruntled Bix and he couldn't protest. Though she is young, Mutt follows commands with growing confidence. She's a very independent individual, challenging Bix's patience daily but growing on him just the same. Her stamina grows by the day and when she tires, Bix carries her in his saddlebag or on his back.
