This is my entry for the Deviant Art OCC Radical Racer competition! I wanted to create an underdog type racer who has made their own equipment because its a classic and interesting story. I've had a lot of fun designing and coming up with a backstory for this character, I hope you like it

Backstory:
During the year of 2047, a young child was left deserted inside of 'the dump', one of the worlds biggest scrapyard sites. This was where large companies would throw away all kinds of dangerous equipment such as vehicle and weapon prototypes and unsafe building materials. The child, alone and frightened, trudged aimlessly around the perimeter of the site for hours, looking for a way to scale the 30m high walls that were supposed to stop thieves from entering. Night was beginning to fall and having given up all hope of escape, the child crawled through a small gap in the tower of scrap material to find shelter.

The next day, he awoke to find an elderly stranger shuffling towards him through the rubble. After the initial shock had worn off, the stranger beckoned and with no other option, he followed the old man deeper into 'the dump' to a small shelter. In this improvised house, there where all kinds of inventions scattered about. This was where he lived for the next 10 years, the stranger teaching him how to build, repair and create different machines. One day, the old man left to scavenge parts but never returned. The boy, alone again, spent the next 5 years perfecting his means of escape which was a vehicle fast and agile enough to scale the wall. His AI guided mechanical arm, the final project built by the boy and the stranger, had become intelligent enough to act on its own. It could create projections which allowed him to out manoeuvre the guards and get to freedom.

Now on the outside, he uses his creations to earn enough to get by through entering dangerous racing tournaments, going by the name of Drifter. Some of his most impressive victories were a result of his mechanical arm which by then had gained quite the ego. It would often write cheeky notes reminding Drifter of this. Drifter would retaliate by using a puppet which he had found after his first race to deactivate the arm as it needs complete darkness to recharge. This allowed Drifter to get some peace during days in which the arm was especially annoying!
