Description
Join Africa-comic group!Okay, this picture has been roaming the internetz for a while, I drew it a couple weeks ago (as you can see from my signature, still indicating March '13) and uploaded it on Facebook first, but I liked it and thought I'd upload it here, too
When I submitted the test page for Africa I received loads of useful pieces of advice, one in particular, which many of you suggested, was to make Africa and Chui more different, because they looked too much alike.
Well, I've been working on that ever since. Can you tell Africa and Chui apart in this picture?
Please be frank, I don't get offended if you say you don't! XD It's very important for me that readers manage to distinguish characters, especially if the two main characters are so similar.
I also added a like of rounded spots on Africa's pelt, since I received the suggestion to vary her spot pattern a bit. How do you like it? ^_^
Once again, thank you SO much for your constant support and critique! It helps me a lot
And once again... again XD
Africa and Chui are LEOPARDS. Not Cheetahs. Not Jaguars.
I know that cheetahs aren't this bulky. Because these two AREN'T cheetahs! XD

Very nice, I really like it. I especially like the designs and how they are similar but different to tell them apart.

Yeah ;_;
It'd be okay if people confused them with jaguars, I'd understand... but with cheetahs? ;_;

Yes they looks way better now! ^^ You can now tell them apart easily Have you tried that black and white thing again like you did with the Chakra heroes to show people how to tell them apart? Because that may help you if you get confused, I mean you did do it first XD

Wow, I can definitely tell the differences now! I like how Africa is more rounded, and Chui is more squared. Their patterns and colors are also more noticeably different, so that also helps! I say these two are very distinguishable now and I'm looking forward even more to the comic!

I love this!!! Chui looks so awesome!!! I see he's a bit darker in colour than Africa. Is it supposed to be that way?

You're welcome! And that's cool, 'cause most people would just make them the same colour since they are the same species, but then it would be hard to tell them apart and wouldn't be as unique.

That's right I want them to be different despite belonging to the same species, like you see two people different and unique with respect to each other

I can definitely see the distinction from the facial features, down to their tails. It's beautiful! However, don't worry so much on setting them apart, that you let your anatomy stumble. Africa looks a lot more like a house cat here because her face has a notable triangular shape to it. Widen her jaws to show off that she has teeth, and is not afraid to use them. (Psst Chui, watch you hind leg there... )
Other than that, I really like these designs. This must be a lot of fun the amount of attention that you are giving to them.

Oh thank you a lot for the tip on her jaw! I see what you mean, I'll definitely make it wider
Hoho, Chui, you don't want to step close to Africa's face XD
And there sure is! I'm having so much fun making characters different! XD

I can totally tell them apart!! I love the differences in their designs--how she has softer angles and he has sharper ones. I think it really offsets male from female as well. Frankly, I've always thought that they have looked quite different, and now just because of the eyes and Chui's white fur tufts. Peoole have been saying to make Africa more "feminine" but to be quite honest I think she looks feminine enough, and from what I've seen of your promotional art I don't think she ACTS all ladylike anyway. I think just the roundness of her design is good enough to indicate her character, but you can still see all that she's strong. I even love the different shapes in their tails. Frankly I think that the people saying their designs weren't different enough wanted you to maybe change more of the colors. In reality, jaguars don't all look a ton different unless you look at them closely or look at body shapes. I've always liked both of their designs :3

Oh my, thank you SO much! I'm really happy that you can tell them apart easily^^
And you're right, Africa is not too feminine, but she doesn't act too ladylike either :'D I also agree that there aren't many differences between male and female leopards except size and weight, so playing with their shapes is enough to differentiate them
Truly thank you a LOT for this lovely comment! It means so much to me^^

I think these two characters' designs are very successful! You've tapped into the fundamentals of really good design here. The fact that Africa is basically smooth curves and rounded shapes contrasts with Chui's angular and blocky features! I love love love that the differences are carried into their markings, and especially their spots! That's very good design, right there.
I'd suggest pushing the distinction even further and bring it into their proportions, if you can. Try lengthening Africa's body and neck just a bit, and give those shapes swooping "s" curves to accent the "female". Maybe even make her tail a little longer, just to increase the appeal. Smooth her cheekbones into curves, and any spots that are not round, make them round.
On Chui, I can see that you're exaggerating the size of his head and shoulders, fantastic! Try making his muzzle a little bigger and chunkier, and maybe make his front paws wider. See if shrinking his eyes just a bit adds to the overall design; I think it will. Try making his neck thicker to give the impression of a muscley guy
Overall, great job at clearly distinguishing two individuals of the same species! Most people don't address the little details that you have done, and just go with different eye color, hair, accessories or obvious markings. I applaud you for not doing that

Oh my, you have no idea how happy your comment made me!
I'm absolutely honoured you like the way I made them different, it was trick to come up with something that could make them structurally different despite the fact that they belonged to the same species. I could have filled Chui up with scars like many artists do with their characters, but that felt really flat for them both
And that's some great suggestions you gave me! I love the idea of using "S" curves on Africa's body to give her rhythm and femininity <3 I'll be practicing that on her, and perhaps I'll be turning all her spots to round I'm still deciding that, I think on a side it would go well with her overall round-ness, but I kind of liked the triangular spots idea, to go with Chui's square one. Then again, I could make Chui's spots completely square and that would solve it!
And about Chui, thanks a ton on the suggestions also! I'll be totally giving him a thicker neck and muzzle, and I'll try shrink his eyes like you suggested Man I'm so excited about this! These two characters mean a lot to me, and I'm eager to make them the best they can be! <3 Truly thank you SO much for your amazing comment! It means the world to me!
