He can't even look at James when he says all of that. Can't look at anyone. I find that authenticΒ and affecting.
I remember being annoyed by the end of this comic the first time, but now I'm just thinking, how else could it have reallyΒ gone? Of courseΒ Javert would try to downplay the whole thing. It's pretty incredible he got any of it out in the first place. Guess he realized (after a few minutes) that you can't make someone actually think by striking them.
I know this is old, but every time I find something that I understand better or differently, or that I think you just did very right, I can hardly help but make note of it.

James Norrington, you have the tact of Stannis Baratheon on a bad day. In fact, that is an insult to Stannis Baratheon. At least you got an honourable death. Javert was a suicide, Erik lost everything he cared about and then got infected with a bad case of sequelitus and Jareth was monologued to death. You got a Dying Moment of Awesome and a pretty defiant response to the tall, tentacled fellow responsible. You have no right to complain whatsoever.

you can tell that Javert thinks he failed, and also that he does not want to talk about it at all. my goodness, the switch from serious to smug/facetious. it takes great skill to cover your emotions that quickly.
