Description YOU'RE = YOU ARE [i.e. YOU'RE BEING STUPID]

YOUR = POSSESSIVE. [i.e. STOP FLAPPING YOUR MOUTH STUPIDLY]

Now then, I can't fathom how so many people fail this. I'm not talking about second language English folk, I'm talking about the native speakers. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

THAT APOSTROPHE WORKS HARD, AND YOU IGNORE IT.

lol This is probably one of my biggest pet peeves. I always have to correct my friends whenever they text me. They ignore me of course...

their, there, they're; to, too, two(and/or 2); were, we're; are, our. <---Among others. It drives me absolutely nuts when people are lazy like this. We all learned the proper usages in grammar school, let's show that we are literate adults and are, in fact, capable of using proper grammar.

I think we should be more concerned about people who don't know the difference between "u" and "you" or the fact "arnt" does not exist... :/

It doesn't worry me that people mix up you're/your or their/they're/there, or don't use apostrophes. What worries me immensely is that they don't perceive any difference between the words or cases! That is a scary thought!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! About time someone pointed out how stupid people can be when it comes to words like "Your"/"You're" or "Their"/"They're". It amazes me how my friends who learned English as a second language know more about it than native speakers do! Even one friend who claims she's learning knows the difference between "your" and "you're". What amazes me even more than that, is that native speakers feel NO SHAME what so ever at being out-shined by foreigners who speak the language twice better then they do!

They just brush it off and say "oh well" and continue to speak or type like morons, but then get upset when they're treated as such! You can't get respect from someone if you're babbling like an idiot! No one is going to respect someone who can't speak or type properly, I certainly have no respect for people who acts like they just crawled out of a hole in the ground.

Though related, another thing that gets me is is when you're talking and you use a "big word" and they look at you dumbly and wonder what the word means. They're usually simple words like "egocentric" or "conceited" or "obnoxious" words that really you should know what they mean. Drives me up a wall, then they say "you talk weird, I don't like it" just because someone uses a rather colorful vocabulary. Makes me so sad to know that our language has gone down the crapper.

WardofSesshomaru In reply to KyuuTatsu [2011-07-20 04:09:12 +0000 UTC]

I totally agree. It's a little embarrassing to the rest of us when people who are learning our language speak it a great deal more correctly than those who learned it from their first word. English is one of the most difficult languages to learn as a second language and most of the native speakers that I know couldn't care less that they "sound" like illiterate idiots.

But it's not the language that's gone down the crapper, it's the moronic people pretending to use it. Native speakers who butcher our poor language should be mandatorily sent to remedial grammar classes. All through my high school years, we had vocabulary lessons in our language arts classes. What happened to what was learned there? Did it go in one ear and out the other?

KyuuTatsu In reply to WardofSesshomaru [2011-07-20 08:08:58 +0000 UTC]

I'd get with mandatory grammar classes! Though it's sad, I hope I'm not the only one that sometimes feels isolated among other native speakers. It happens namely when someone asks the definition of word I've used. I suppose some would call me an elitist but I just don't see any excuse for talking like trailer trash.

I'm southern, I use slang words from time to time and I know they're not words technically. I've just heard them used by my family and friends that I've gotten use to them. Yet when it comes to making a serious point, or speaking seriously with someone, I make a point to sound like I've got all my marbles in one bag.

I've noticed, as well, people do tend to shy away from people who sound like they paid attention during language arts. I often times wonder why that is, and I wonder equally as much why it feels like there is a language gap when we're all speaking the same language.

Now I see you were trying to tell me the difference between the two words. =X

This could NOT have come at a better time! XD

Only yesterday did I lay my eyes on my engagement party invites, made by my dear (slightly unhinged) stepmother. She made them all with her scrapbooking skills... but I am totally utterly fanatical with grammar and spelling. (I even use them in txt messages). I went through her drafts and tidied up the errors, hoping for the final to be error-free when:

'Your invited to the engagement of...'

I spat chips. I even CORRECTED this on the drafts. All 130 of them plastered with 'your' instead of 'you're'. Nobody understood why I was getting so worked up. 'Nobody's going to notice' says my mum.

Yes they bloody well are, *I* noticed it, and worst of all, I'm a writer, and they're going to think I made them. O_o

I should have done them myself. It's NOT rocket science!!! XD

I don't think it's that people don't KNOW what the difference is, (I'm sure everyone does), it's just that some of us type super quickly and it comes out wrong...just a lot of people making a simple error, no one is perfect Plus, who cares, as long as we can understand each other?

This used to annoy me the most, but you know what annoys me more now?
Alot.

I remember at school my English teacher wrote two things on the black board and asked the class which was right. She wrote "A lot" and "Alot". That was the first time I'd ever heard of "alot" and I wondered why anyone would think that was right.
The majority of the class put their hand up to "Alot".

I was just stunned. Does no-one read any more?
