Description
YOU'RE = YOU ARE [i.e. YOU'RE BEING STUPID]YOUR = POSSESSIVE. [i.e. STOP FLAPPING YOUR MOUTH STUPIDLY]
Now then, I can't fathom how so many people fail this. I'm not talking about second language English folk, I'm talking about the native speakers. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED.
THAT APOSTROPHE WORKS HARD, AND YOU IGNORE IT.

Oh gosh, it drives me insane when people do this. I really and truely feel like slapping them.
Once this girl in my science class wrote ''Mr. Sidney, your awesome'' on the board when he was out, and when he came back in, he corrected the word and then erased the whole thing.

Agreed.
I also find it annoying when people don't know the difference between "its" and "it's"; "who's" and "whose"; "their", "there", and "they're"; etc.
I mean, I understand it when it's an occasional mishap, but if you keep doing it over, and over, and over again with clear disregard to the context...that irritates me.

Really, unless it's an essay or something and grammar actually matters, then it really isn't a problem. They both sound the same, and when used in a sentence the meaning isn't affected. I just wish English wasn't full of these ridiculous little rules, and actually made some logical sense. If someone was actually writing something formally, then you should not use contractions at all; "you are" instead.

DeadSweet In reply to fusobotic [2011-07-20 01:10:38 +0000 UTC]
Actually it is important. People who are learning English as a second language pick these things up off of native speakers, and try to use them in a formal context. The meaning is totally affected, how is "You are" equal to "Your" ? It's just rude and inconsiderate. You don't go out in public naked, you should treat language the same, dress it up to the appropriate degree.

fusobotic In reply to DeadSweet [2011-07-20 17:24:33 +0000 UTC]
Yes exactly, but if someone was learning a language, it would be better practice not to use contractions at all. What I'm saying is that in order to avoid this problem people could start saying "you are" instead of "you're" (and this is actually the proper format when writing something formally). Really, I just dread the English language, even though I'm native to it. Compared to others, it's a mess of ridiculous rules that have innumerable exceptions, mainly because it's a combination of several different languages.
And yes, intelligent people still understand what you mean if you mistakenly write your instead of you're in casual conversation, though I'd bug someone if they wrote up an essay and didn't spot that while proof-reading.

I consider this a beautiful stamp, and I absolutely love it.
However, remember that people make mistakes sometimes. We all type when we're sleepy at one point, and we all hit the wrong key or miss a key sometimes.
But if people do this over and over (example, which somebody actually typed to me: "your being stupid, i dont no how u can uself frm lokn lik your an idiot")
It pains me to type that.
